Apologies if this has been covered 634 times before, but I haven't been able to do a search on PistonHeads for over 24 hours without it throwing errors at me..!

I am seriously considering throwing some money at the MX5 over next winter / for Summer 2009 and am looking at the different FI routes. I've only had the car a week, but I can tell I am going to want more power soon (The only area in which it lacks!).

I'm not looking for massive gains, but 180-200bhp at the crank would be ideal. I would want something that once it is fitted doesn't need 'constant' tinkering although the car is a weekend only car so ...

I've had turbo cars before, and have driven a couple of supercharged cars (Neither MX5's though!) and much prefer the delivery of power from a supercharged engine although I would consider a turbo too.

My car is the 1.8i Mk1 (Merlot). As the car will be off the road for a few months when I fit any FI kit, I would prefer to do the work myself (Am handy with a spanner, but I'm slooow).

So..

Any recommendations between turbo charging and supercharging?

Any recommendations for specific turbo or supercharging kits? I've found a few companies who can supply or supply & fit but some appear to be in the states and quite a few don't quote prices.

Can it be done for 2k ? (Kit only, me to fit).

Spannering it yourself means £2k should do it.

I'm afraid I haven't any direct SC experience to help you but the last time I looked in to a kit for the MX5 that sounded about right. I will watch this thread with interest as I still fancy a blown Mk1.

Try Jackson Racing as a starting point.

180bhp can be done well for £2K and own spannering. My route would be £1200 base BEGI kit and then a £550 LINK G3 standalone ECU + mapping, that'd be fit and forget. With the small GT25 turbo I suspect the drive wouldn't be much different to a supercharger.

There's a lot of resource for this topic on miata.net and the mx5ocforum, as well as nutz.

Currently at that price you're looking at a JR (Jackson Racing) SC unfortunately no longer imported new but come up secondhand or can be bought from the USA.

The FFS and Moss MP62 kits should be out here soon and I hear P5 is working on a few variations.

Well if you are near Brum i can let you have a go in my one to see what its like, MP62 Charger and about 190Bhp

I also have a good friend Mark who does a lot of work on 5's and Chargers.

Could get one in your car and fitted for between £1100 and £1500 with a Jackson Racing Charger and a Power Card + Possible Timing control.

Drop me an email if you need any help.
