First time in the MX5 forum so please be gentle.

I'm building two Lexus engined AC Cobra replicas and have obtained two Mazda MX5 series 1 high back seats for the first Cobra which I intend to get retrimmed.

The seats have working integral stereo speakers in the head restraints and the question is do I keep them, are they any good, or are they just a gimmick?

The Cobra is very much a cruising machine with long European cruising holidays in mind so having a decent means of providing "sounds" within the cabin may be useful. It has a very efficient and quiet underfloor exhaust system so unlike most Cobras the speakers won't have to compete with the cacophony of the relentless off beat sidepipes popping, banging and farting in my right earhole.....

How useful do you officianados of the MX5 view the integral head rest speaker system?

I am all ears.......... Sorry couldn't resist!!

Cheers,

Tony

Yes - they do make a difference - absolutely - certainly not a gimmick.

But - I'd replace the speakers themselves, if they are the originals.

Thanks for the info, are the original speakers not very good?

As a bit of an aside I picked up the pair of leather seats today for the grand sum of £10 ( yes, I won't be going to heaven taking financial advantage of a scrappie) and the speakers in the seats are a "Brucie bonus" so really its more a question of do I keep the speakers or dump them when I take the car to the trimmers. If they can be heard I'll keep them and stick in a MP3/ Ipod player in the car, if they arent useful I'll take them out and get the seats retrimmed as per normal.

Cheers,

Tony

AS kinks says , you can replace them with 4" jobbies with a bit of chopping , mx5 parts sell them .

The originals are pretty poor - but considering how old and small they are - you can simply swap them with bigger/more powerful ones.

But I'd certainly keep them (and upgrade them) - they do make a noticable difference.

Don't you just love Pistonheads?

I post a question about whether I should keep some free speakers in some dirt cheap seats I just bought.

After a couple of posts from you guys I find myself peruseing ebay for upgraded speakers, spending more than I bought the complete seats for, to replace the originals speakers that I didn't initially even know I wanted to use.

I am far too easily led.

Cheers,

Tony
