I have a Mk2 1998 1.8 and am looking at buying a new bike.

Does anyone have any good suggestions about bike carriers for the MX5?

Cheers

I might have the name a bit wrong but the best one is the Saris Bones available at Halfords and probably other places.

Yeah, the Saris Bones is a good choice. Have used the 3-bike one to carry two bikes and works a treat, although there is a 2-bike one. They can be pricey but check out ebay, my b/f managed to pick one up for 50 quid.

This looks like it will do the job. I have the need to only carry one bike and there are a few on ebay at the moment.

Cheers

Saris Bones was utterly useless for me. The stiff Jap-spec Bilsteins on my '5 and my big heavy bike completely overwhelmed the Bones rack. The thing was jumping around all over the shop, despite all the ties being done up to bootlid-bending tension. I can still see the marks in the bootlid left by the feet too. frown

I put some cloth under each of the feet and metal clips as I was worried that it would mark the boot.

Guys - As some of the long time member might remember I've done some serious research into this.

The best way to do it in my opinion

Towbar from moss europe. you do not need to fit the actual ball mount itself, jsut the backplate. Its actually not too bad looking, sits low and discrete.

Then order your self a rack from www.aistoncycleracks.co.uk (no affiliation!)

Great value when compared to Thule/Pendle, and they'll modify/customise them to suit. Handmade in the toon.

A towbar rack is by far the best way to carry a bike (roof mounted ain't available to you!) .

It is much more rigid and secure than a boot rack. There is no contact between bike/rack and bodywork, so no damage. Also, you retain acess to the boot.

MPG is affected less as bike sits lower.

When I eventually get my MX5, this is what I will be doing, no doubt.

Oh, just to add, I have sold bike racks for a long time so I do speak from experience here!

I agree with snotrag - something bolted on solidly is definitely the way to go, although I'll most likely be building one myself from scratch since I don't want a bloody great tow bar mount hanging under the back bumper of my '5..
