Hello all
I am taking delivery of my first MX5 in the morning and can’t wait!
It’s a 2000 X 1.8 with 31,000 on the clock. Is it worth getting the cam belt done yet, I know the mileage is a bit off but the car is getting on all the same. In addition is it best to change any other bits while it’s off (water pump etc)
Thanks in advance

I was in a similar situation with my '98 car a couple of years ago and had the belts changed as a precaution as they're now considered a time related issue as well as mileage. I can't remember the time span although get a feeling it was 9 years.

Even though they're non-interference engines I decided that being stranded wasn't worth not spending the small outlay for a belt change.

They are supposed to be replaced by mileage or age whichever comes first but bear in mind that in the states all cam-belts have to last 100,000 miles with age not being a consideration and they use the same belts as us.

Cam belt is at 54K miles or 6 years, whichever is sooner, as Lazza said. The choice is yours whether you follow this or just wait!

Just checked the service checklist, it's actually every 54K miles (Mk2), age doesn't come into it. I think it's at every 60K for the mk1.

It didn't come into it, but as far as I know Mazda later changed their minds and put an age recommendation on the belts too.

At least, that's what Mazda told me prior to me buying my car.

I think it's fair to say around 60k miles or 5 years really, to be honest. So it's well overdue, imo. But, as said the engine is non-interference, so you would only be left stranded.

Thanks for all the help!
I bit the bullet and got it done today. I spoke with Sam Goodwin who I had heard good things about. He said it should be done. As it was in for a service I thought I may as well get done... one less thing to think about when out and about.
This is it, bring on the bank holiday rain or shine!

Lovely looking standard car. I've had 2 Mk2s. You'll like it.
