Looking for a decent alarm for the pending MX5, previous alarms have all been standard with my cars so I don't know where to start...

Would ideally like one that can be 'armed' when the top is down, or is ideal for use on rag tops. Car will be 'worth' about £4k so I don't want to go silly, but happy to spend a few hundred. Don't need any fussy features such as remote start.. just a good, simple and basic alarm/alarm-immobiliser that works and is ideally Thatcham Cat 1 approved.

Any advice or recommendations?

My advice? Don't bother. Just don't leave anything of any value in the car.
It's a convertible - no alarm will make it any safer as the most valuable thing that is likely to be damaged is the soft-top as the scrotes try to get in.
They all have a Thatcham approved immobiliser which is the most important thing.

Clifford Concept 300 can work with a '5, adjustable sensitivity and you can switch off the microwave bit if you leave it with the top down.

I've never bothered on mine, I have an immobiliser, and disklok, and don't leave anything in the car smile

Excellent.

It has a Toad alarm on it as standard which seems more than good enough. Will save a few pennies to put towards other things smile

I have, on occasion you understand, left the door unlocked when mine is unattended and empty (and immobilised). Reason being is to negate the need for any tea-leaves wanting access needing to knife the roof to get in. I never leave anything in it anyway.

I remember reading about someone else (Skinny?) who's '5 was broken into by the scrote slashing the roof with a knife. The idiot didn't check that the door was locked first because if he did he'd have found it unlocked and the glove compartment empty. You just can't account for stupidity.
