didnt notice this section, so ap0logies for reprint from general section..
ok so there is a lot of love for the baby mazda here....i quite fancy one...!!..my question may well see me burned at the stake by all you petrolheads, but there is what appears to be a lovely one for sale near me, and its from a dealer whom a frien of mine knows and trusts, so there may or may not be room for some decent discount...
problem??..its an import, and its a low mileage (62k miles) automatic....is it worth saving a few shillings and having an uato mx5 or does this totally kill the car...i LIKE autos, but it would seem strange to have a small, chuckable car with a rev happy engine....and an auto box.....
also, would it kill resale..or, as these are such hairdressers cars, would it help..hah..stands back, ducks....

There is nothing wrong with an auto MX-5. The engines are slightly different from the manual cars having lower compression and different cams (I think) so they produce more mid-range torque but less power and are less rev-happy. This is to suit the characteristics of an auto-box.
The auto-box itself is a fairly basic one but it does the job well and isn't too heavy.
Some people like the way the auto drives. Personally I'd prefer more control over the gear changes in such a sporty car but it's all a matter of personal taste.
The price is the problem. They are usually cheap which makes them look like a bargain but there is a good reason for them being cheap - not many people want a 1.6 auto sportscar so they are very hard to sell on and usually end up being sold on cheap and it still usually takes a while for them to shift.

I ran a 91 eunos auto for 2 years(put 30k miles on it) it was a great little car, I had a 50 mile each way commute to work through winding A & B roads. it was a hoot, for a gentle tootle cruising along with an auto is great, for a more spirited drive it has an overdrive on top, so click this off and it revs nicely, which is handy for a downshift into corners. That combined with the perfect balance meant that i was never accused of holding up the traffic!
