Hi all, planning on doing my first oil change on the MX5 with my new Pela Pump - bit of a cheat's way, but sucks out all the oil through the dipstick using suction so nice and clean.

What oil should I use and how much should I use? Is it 3.5l? I was planning on getting some Halford own semi/full synthetic as I heard there is really no need to go for Mobil 1 on a MX engine.

Any advice welcome.

Is this a scheduled change or an interim change?

If it's a scheduled change I'd do the job properly by draining it out of the sump to ensure any nasties are drained out too rather than recirculating.

I use Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 fully synthetic as was recommended some time ago by opieoilman on his oil recommendation thread (the Opie website now recommends the same).

Maybe it's excessive but I only let what I believe to be the best products go near my '5. From Opie the price is actually very reasonable anyway.

I don't have stats in front of me but I seem to remember engine oil capacity is 4 litres. That's top of the head stuff though and I seem to change the oil on a fair few vehicles so I'm sure somebody else will correct me if needs be. I can check the handbook once I'm back near my '5 and post later if not.

Edited to add: I just checked prices on Halfords website and their stuff costs a lot more than the oil on the Opie site.

I had a full oil change 6000 miles ago - scheduled change is 8k isn't it? So it's kind of an interim change as it's a bit low and a bit tappety so I just want to make sure she is being treated properly.

Mobil 1 - Costco - £25

I think it's 3.8 litres including the oil-filter.

Regular service interval is 9000 miles.
If you are getting rattling tappets you'd be better off running an engine flush and draining from the sump to make sure you clean out as much of the old oil as possible.

Ah, balls! I was hoping not to get my hands dirty....

Might use my Pela this time then get a garage to do the engine flush for me.

How much postage do you pay on top of that?

I think it's £5.95 although even at that it's still cheaper than Halfords.

Dude, you are bodging the job with so called pump. all engine 'waste' goes to bottom of sump, its best to give full engine drain via sump. it is not messy job.

But it means getting the tools to get the car up so I can get under plus the space, which I don't have. Pump was recommended to me by Jimparts - his car is ridiculously powerful and I am sure he would not use it if he didnt think it did an alright job on his engine.

I got mine through work. We don't do anything that needs Costco membership (it's a Mergers & Acquisitions company) and I'm in IT so so I really don't need it for work but it was offered as a bit of a perk which I was very happy to accept.

Do you now anyone with membership?
Where do you live?
