I'm currently seriously considering an MX5 after my test drive a few weeks ago (Prompted by the general consensus of the MX5 as a great car from the PH crew!).

I've today been looking at insurance, my current insurers have quoted me the following for a full years comprehensive cover, £350 excess garaged in a city centre (I'm 23, no claims/convictions) and protected no claims.

Mark 1

1.6 (Any derivative) £284
1.8 (Any derivative) £284
1.6 BBR Turbo £302

1.6 Import £461
1.8 Import £540

So, what is the score with the imports costing so much more to insure? BBR Turbo also seems pretty darn cheap too, at only £18 a year extra over the NA 1.6!

My renewal has just come through - 1.8i Mk1 VR-A import (1 of 700), and through Privilege is £208, fully comp, for business use, not garaged, unlimited milage, Mrs. Kinky as named driver, etc, etc.

And that's gone up from last year (IIRC).

Kinky's price is really good. Imports do alas attract painful insurance compared to UK cars. I'm with A-1 Insurance in Cornwall - paid £360 fully comp in Jan...

Actually - I'll correct myself ......

I checked my own 5 profile to see last years insurance cost and it was £242 .... so it's really gone down £34
