Whereabouts of M851OWP
Discussion
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone on here owns a British Racing Green MX5 M851OWP ? I was the first owner of this as a company car and it was starting to show problems when I handed it back after 2 years and around 30k miles (If I recall it may have been more). Just curious if its still going and if any of the problems it was showing when new resulted in major works....
Cheers

Thats my (ex) baby ! Ahhh good to see shes still running. I see the wheels have been changed and she now has a wooden steering wheel and chrome wing mirrors. Now I was wondering , is the gearbox behaving itself when we parted company there was a problem with 3rd (or was it second, it was a long time ago) where the synchromesh was knackered and it would crunch going into gear. Also if you look carefully inside the front o/s wing above the wheel you should find evidence of minor damage repair. Lent her to a colleague one weekend and he managed to plant it in a bush and dent the wing. I also got sprayed by a cement mixer which didnt do the paintwork any good, but looks like its pristine so someone must have been very busy with the polish at some point !
This was my first convertible, I went on to own several Saab turbo convertibles before ending up with my current TVR. I had a lot of fun in that MX5 :-)
I was the one who did the headlight mod so they dont pop up on sidelights too .
Happy days.

he's a she
I call him the snot rocket although the girlfriend has named him kermit
Yes the gearbox is a tad notchy and it currently has 133k on the clock , ive noticed a few panels are of varying shades of green ,
not noticed any repair damage inside the wings but not really looked , bought it nearly a year ago for £1500 ,
you had a new radio at some point as well ,
ive still got the original exchange unit in the garage along with all the other original bits off the car ,
Did you know its one of only 150 made ?

If its just a tad notchy then thats ok, this was more of a kerunch even with fully depressed clutch. Must have been sorted at some point! Now you know why its varying shades of green... but when I handed it back it was still all British racing green, just had lots of scratches and marks from the concrete splashes ! Never had a new radio in my 2 years - it had a clarion casette player which was pants. I did have some nice alloys on but took them off and sold them when I gave it back.
I reckon £1500 is a bargain for a 1.8s no matter what the mileage, these cars are pretty much bullet proof !
One of only 150 made ? you mean in British Racing Green ?
I will have to try and find some photos of it (her/him?) when new I have some somewhere.

Only managed to find one pic on the puter, others I will scan in when I can find them.
Never realised it was so rare ! I do recall having to wait a long time to take delivery. My failing memory thought it was an S but now I recall I couldnt afford that so had to make do with manual windows and such . Yes it was on dial contracts, I had it for 2 years then left the job so had to hand it back.
This pic must be when I had just got it, still has some really nasty wheel trims on it, quickly replaced with alloys
Other things I can see have been changed that I never had ... toast rack... clock... chrome tail pipe... wooden bits.... stereo.
Nice to it still looking good ! I have to admit I thrashed it to within an inch if its life when I had it, fantastic fun it was too.

Never had a hardtop but they all came with the fixings and wiring for the heated rear window. When I had mine a popular upgrade was to have the plastic rear window replaced with glass which used the heated rear window connection from the hardtop.
I rarely had the roof on even in the snow and rain so wouldnt have had much use for a hard top !. I remember when I first got it we had a heatwave, put the roof down when it was delivered it didnt go back up for 6 weeks just parked up with the roof off. Bit different now in summer isnt it !
There must be some significance to that coin, how cool is that !

I think you're only allowed black&white plates on cars older than a certain date
Yeah plates have to meet the regulations for when the car was 1st registered. So white characters on a black plate are not allowed on any age of MX5. I think it's somewhere around 1974 and before that you can get away with.Great story finding your 2 owners of the same car on PH!
Nice cuppa , i think so mate , but im only going on what info is on the mxoc site , The GF said the same thing about the coin as well , some sort of good luck thing ! was a cracking find and im going to tape it back in , if i wasnt hunting around under the dash with me torch i wouldnt have found it
cars before 1973 are allowed silver on black everything else should be yellow and white .
This is where im going to order a set from £25 for a pair of black plates with plastic press on letters , proper retro
