Hi All,

If we were to upgrade the wheels to 15" on our MX5 what size tyres should we be going for?

Looking at maybe these (15" x 6.5&quotwink:

Or these:

Current tyres are shockingly bad (3 x P6000's and one unknown) and aren't matched across the axles. It's how they came when we brought the car and the tyres are almost brand new.

Another option would be to get the standard wheels refurbed and put on new tyres but I wanted to price up some new wheels anyway

They're going to be going on this:

I've a couple of sets of the Mazdaspeed MS-01R JDM optional wheels which are 15" fitted with 195/50R15 tyres (one set with Goodyear Eagle F1s, one with Yokohama AO48Rs). Neither set of tyres original jap spec, but bought from two different sources, both with the same size tyres, so should be okay.

As for tyres, definitely lose the ditch finders. F1s are very well respected on the '5 for road and light track use.

I've got 14" minilite copies on mine - however run 205's on these rims, sorry size is not representative of what you're looking for, but they are Yokohamas - just the standard type that they do. I've found the grip, and the wear rate, to be excellent with these. Weren't a bank breaker either.

Cheers! Going to have to do a bit of saving.

I had a bit of unexpected sideways action while following Sheepy's porsche on Sunday which really summed up how bad the tyres are.

When roads have that morning dampness (not wet) i'm struggling to get any grip or confidence out of the car.

If you had decent tyres - i.e. summer performance tyres like GY F1 or Toyo T1 you would still have been going sideways. The roads are very slippery at the moment - I had wheel-spin in 3rd at 2500rpm yesterday driving sensibly!

Oh without a doubt but at least when the F1's break away they do it a bit more progressively (i had them on my old golf). I'm finding the P6000's give no feedback what so ever and I feel like i'm driving around on sheet ice when the roads are bit slippy (they seem fine in the wet)

I've got Yokohamas on my MX-5 too (C-Drives), and they're actually much better than I expected, going from previous experience with A539s. They don't have the same outright grip in the dry and in the summer-time rain as the Bridgestone Potenzas I was using before, but they do seem to be working much better than the Bridgestones ever did in the current slippery cold and damp conditions here in Wales...

What tyre pressure are you running?
When did you last get the alignment checked out?

P6000 aren't ideal but they shouldn't be a problem.

195/50 R15s GY Eagle F1 GSD3s on Mazdaspeed MS-01Rs.

Both those wheels look lovely, streets ahead of the standard 14" minilite copies IMHO. There's a set of Watanabes on mx5oc for 150 quid which would look nice if resprayed thumbup

195/50 15" has to be the tyre size of choce due to them being the cheapest size of tyre available, £30 gets you good rubber thats rather nice, 14" are a bit more expensive as they are not as common and 16" are absurd being more like £80 a tyre.

I have 195.50 15" Bridgestone RE720's and a WIM fast road alignment. Going to work in the mornings at the minute I've turned the boost down to 6psi and with that amount of power I guess ~190bhp I can happily keep my foot to the floor through the gears. Over 9 psi I start to spin wheels over 5000rpm.

30psi all round. That's after I checked them all on Sunday morning and felt they were a bit low. TBH i'm thinking that they may be a little high. It's 1 P6000 on the back + 1 odd tyre. All with good tread but not matched.

My thinking is if i've got to get 4 new tyres I should consider new wheels at the same time

iirc recommended tyre pressures on teh MX-5 are 26psi all round. I keep mine at 28 (don't know why really, 26 always seems eek to me!)

Saab is at 36 for high speed/fully loaded runs! hehe

Ah ok I thought it felt skittish. I'll take a bit out. They were down at 20-22 when I checked them.

Still think I should get rid of them and put some GSD3's on. I miss them since having them on the Golf

Yep - should be 26psi all round.
Also, if you have an odd tyre put it on the front. The rear tyres are the most important for safe handling so the 2 best (matching) tyres should go on the back axle.

Ok will do. That's my job for tommorrow. Swap the wheels over, lower the pressure and also change the alternator belt

P6000 are for family cars really so aren't ideal for an MX-5 but they shouldn't be terrible. If you mix them with something decent they will probably feel worse. In cold conditions they are probably as good as F1s if not better.

That'll mean GSD2. One of the reasons people go for 15" over 14" is better rubber (in the case of F1s that means GSD3).
