Recent MX5 purchase have noticed that the ride is very hard, def looks lower at the front not sure about the rear.
Shocks are Standard and the front is harder then the back as well when i push on the springs from outside .
Am i right in thinking the vast amount of ride quality is controlled by the rear set up, the front supporting engine more then occupant ?

No you aren't right - the MX-5 has close to 50:50 weight balance so all 4 corners are made to work equally.
The rear should appear higher than the front - that's normal.

How old is the car and what is the mileage?

Is it an import? What spec? What colour are the dampers? If yellow they are the Bilsteins fitted to S-Spec and some others. Some complain of a harsh ride but I think it's fine - much better than my Saab's lowered suspension!
