Keys locked in boot - oh s**t
Discussion
Funny story - I also posted on owner's club forum...
It was a cold night in a Tesco car park in Aberdeen, just before shutting the boot I said to my friend "I'm terrified of shutting the keys in the boot," clunk, I reach into my pocket, no keys. I must have had them to open the boot, and they are now nowhere to be found. The car itself is still locked, and we are stranded.
I have breakdown cover with my insurance company, Admiral, so I decide to give them a call. The phone is answered without it actually ringing, and I describe to the guy my situation. They tell me someone will be with me within the hour. About twenty minutes later the guys from Balmedie Service Station are with me. I am abandoned cruelly by my companion.
When they arrive they ask me where the keys are, I let them know they are in the boot. They ask if there is any way of gaining access to the boot from the car, I tell them there is no way, which they don't actually believe. One of the guys calls his base and they tell him there is a ski hatch through to the boot. I express surprise at this as it's a feature I was unaware of. But they won't even look at the boot without trying to get in from the car, so I sign the disclaimer and they set to work.
First off they tried to push the catch with a wire rod through the side of the window. He can't do this so he tries winding down the window. Seeing these guys at work is impressive, he actually manages to wind the window with another wire rod, and reaches through and opens the car. It's worryingly easy to get in. We take off the hard top, put up the soft top and he takes off the rear upholstery. There are the couple of steel plates which he takes off to no avail. They figure there is no way of getting into the boot from the car.
So they set to work on the boot. They didn't even entertain the thought of playing with the lock. They put airbags under the sides and drive a wedge in, bringing up the hinges at the back, peeking in to see if they can spot my keys. They try playing with the catch with a wire rod but this is a no hoper. They are able to access the bolts holding on the hinge, so set to work unscrewing these. They get the hinge off and are able to prize the boot open some more. The keys are spotted atop my shopping, are fished out, and the boot is opened in order to reattach the hinge.
I thank the guys muchly and drive off
But this morning I notice the boot no longer shuts properly My dad and I will need to look at the hinges when I have time over Xmas when there is some daylight.
Lesson learned = put keys in pocket when the boot is open.
At the time I was racking my brain for mx5 experts I know. I have only had the car a week and a half so I know no one within the community. I tried calling the mx5 specialists I bought the car from but there wasn't anyone home. Does anyone know a tried and tested way of gaining access to the boot?

Mine is a very base model, I tested a MkII with the release in the center console but mine has no such feature.
It can be retro fitted. But does it not affect security if you decide to park it up and leave the top down?

Can only go on the MK1 but my center console has a lock on it ,wouldn't take much to yank it off though ,still if they really want to get in there's not much that will stop them It can be retro fitted. But does it not affect security if you decide to park it up and leave the top down?

When I had the S2000 I did a very smiler thing at a late night Tesco's ,didn't realise at the time but the remote fob unlocks everything on the car but if you don't open a door it locks the car again after 30 seconds ,cue a 3 hr wait in the freezing cold will my brother did a round trip to get the spare keys
If I go in the boot, I always leave the keys in the lock to avoid locking them in the boot!
If you fit the remote release, there is a mod to the boot lock that by turning the key one way it operates normally, turn the key the other way and the remote release will not work.

Where'd you get that key fob from? My only key has a bit of a crack in it, and if I'm going to get some new keys cut I'd might as well get some nice flippy ones like that...[flippy key fob picture]

Raffles - pretty much the exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago ! I can totally sympathise with you !
The AA got into mine, and did a mighty fine job.
The weird thing is that just before I did it, I also commented to my mate that it would be really easy to lock the keys in the boot
