Got a flat tyre last week and got 90% of the way to changing it at the roadside when I discovered I had nothing to take the locking wheel nuts off!!!

Would appear that when I bought the car, the adaptor to add to the socket wrench was not included and I didn't ask....

Does anyone know if I can get a new part to remove the locking nuts (bearing in mind it is a mk1)? Or will I have to get a garage to hack them off? Don't want the old alloys damaged.

The easiest way of solving this, is to buy a cheap socket (about the right size), hammer it on to the nut and undo it.

Sounds like a plan - guessing that is what a garage will do anyway.

WAIT!!!! All standard MX5 locking wheel nuts are the same! Just go to the local Mazda dealer and borrow one out of a car. I've used my locking wheel nut adapeter from my MK1 on another MK1 and a MK2.

DO the other 3 up tight to release pressure on the locking one.

You could try using a Gator Grip (a socket with multiple pins in it, should fit all nuts & bolts).

Make sure you get a good quality one though, people have had mixed results with cheap ones (good ones are still less than £20).

I had Mazda locking wheel-nuts on both my MX-5's. I lost the key on the Mk1 but the dealer was able to order me a new one from my number-plate. It was a proper locking nut which is unique (or near enough) to the car. Same was on my Mk2.5.

All the ones I've seen on MX5s look like this:

Obviously thats not accurate and all the zigs and zags should be the same length etc.

After using it on a MK2 we took it to the dealer and ordered another one for that car as you did. Hardly a 2nd glance. So I figure they are all the same.

Is PH working?

I posted saying that my key looks like this:

And the dealer ordered another one without blinking an eye when shown mine. Like he couldn't get it wrong as there all the same....

Yes PH is working and you've double-posted tongue out

That is the type I had. When I lost mine on the '98 Mk1 I visited the dealer to get a replacement. He had a few in the dealership but none of them fitted my car so he had to order one. I don't suppose there are many combinations but they aren't all the same.

Contacted two dealers who have both said "no, no, no, no ,no sonny". They reckon I can't order a new part, but will have to bring her in, have them chiselled off and replaced - could cost '£100-150' for the privelige.

So rang another, who said he had a master key, and would replace them for £30.

Jobs a good'un.

P.S. Doing my first oil change tonight - exciting!

When I lost mine the dealer (Newbury Mazda)ordered me a new one by putting the car reg into their computer system and getting the part no and locking wheel nut code from the computer. If your locking wheel nuts were supplied by Mazda with the car (and they look like the Mazda supplied items to me) then they should be able to get a new one for you the same way.

Shafted - dealer have rung back and said their master-key won't fit, they can't get me a new part, and therefore will have to spend 2 hours chiselling them off. £188 for the privelige, including new set fitted.

What boring and rubbish way to spend £188. But I have no choice as my wheels will have to come off at some point!

Quoting myself here, but this is £20 not £188.

It could depend though if there are actually aftermarket nuts on the car. I've seen some trick ones that are totally smooth on the outside, and the smooth caseing freely spins.

I suspect anyway that there is currently a monkey underway with a hammer and a sacraficial socket as we speak..err type.

Munter I reckon I might have those. I recall when trying to originally take the wheel off, the casing just span round when I tried to wrench it off. Rubbish.

But you don't need to pay main stealer prices for a monkey to chisel the nuts off - any old garage can do that

Already done. Too late. Lesson learnt. They did do a free 'check' of my suspension for me though....
