Mrs Snoggledog is a very very naughty girl. She's persuaded me to buy Irish's MX-5 and I have to admit to enjoying it tremendously.

After picking it up and heading back home I had my first experience of a totally new phenomena. (This from someone who's only ever driven FWD cars).. Within 5 miles I experienced my first power slide. paperbag Granted, Hyde Park corner is not exactly the best place to practice but my father was with me and he did say to give it some beans. I was only too happy to oblige whistle

So in light of my new purchase (thanks Irish) I have a few questions that'll hopefully keep me out of trouble.

1) I think that the tyres need to be replaced.. Any advice as to what rubber best suits a '89 Eunos?
2) There are a few odd sounds (probably my poor driving I know). But are there any good MX5 specialists in the Thames Valley / Chilterns / West London area who I can take the car too for a thorough going over?

(note to Irish.... Nothing is wrong with the car just that I like peace of mind by taking a 18 year old motor to a specialist to check over so that I'm 100% certain. You have not sold me a dodgy motor. I just like peace of mind is all.)

for tyres, a lot of people recommend goodyear eagle F1s (these may be hard to get of right now), or toyo proxes (T1-S or T1-R)

Do I get a bonus pint for having an Irish flag on my 5?

Oh.. I'm sure that I can run to a pint for Kinky and Irish next time we meet.. I've got a huge grin on my fez most of the time. Even learning this previously unknown art of sliding the tail.

Hooligan? Moi? Just experimenting. biggrin

Come along to a Cobham Commoners meet!
We have regular monthly meets at The Cricketers at Downside near Cobham last Tuesday of the month and usually have a midweek meet somewhere too (usually Rose & Crown Egham but could be anywhere). There is a meet at the Rose & Crown this Thursday wink
There are no individual experts but isn't a lot we don't know as a collective group and we have most types of modification represented including Turbo, supercharge and even V8 spin

I hope to come along to the meet.. It does depend on getting an evening pass though. If I'm allowed I probably wouldn't be able to get there until about 9 though.

I probably won't be there myself this Thursday as I play 5-a-side football after work on Thursdays frown
I might be there late (like after 9pm) but I doubt it unless the weather is perfect rolleyes

Oh, and it's not an official MX-5 OC meet. We are just a group of enthusiasts that find the OC boring and/or too restrictive. Ever been to a South Central meet? If so you'll know what I mean rolleyes
Like I said, there are turbo & supercharged (M45 hotside & coldside and MP62), Mk1, Mk2, Mk2.5, Mk3, S2000, MR2 Mk1 & Mk2 and even a stupid-power RX7 (when it's finished) smile

Ralf,

I discovered the rolling road report last night - brought it down to the Ace. Will post it along with spare keys!

Right.. Day 4 is underway. First day in the wet too. Huge understeer followed by lift off oversteer so I was glad that I took the advice of LexSport and took the car to Performance 5 over my lunch hour. Ok so by the time I'd got back to work it was lunch 3 hours but hey hum.

Ermm. Well. I had a sneeking suspicion that the brakes were a little off. The rear brakes were almost locked solid. The fronts are slightly warped. So as the wheels were off I took the opportunity to check out the tread. yikes sums up the front near side. The tracking's out a tad. So while the car's up on the ramp a quick check of the dampers and springs shows that they need replacing.

So the car needs new tyres, disks and pads all round, a 4 wheel alignment and new dampers and springs. Oh.. and the rear box for the exhaust is close to getting porous.

Now that they've freed off the brakes the car's been transformed. New rubber, wheel alignment and shocks will make it dance and a new set of pads and disks will help it stop properly.

Hang on.. I only bought this as a temporary runner. scratchchin Looks like that's going to be changing.

Still loving it though and looking forward to getting all the little bits sorted.

Note to Kinky... Mrs Snoggledog is sad to say that she must decline your kind offer of being her babysitter but she has to work until 10:30 so won't be needing your services at this time. However she would like to say thanks for the offer.. Not sure whether she was being serious or not.

This is fast becoming a blog.

That little lot needn't cost all that much and you will be amazed at how the car drives once fettled. Phil and Steven are great guys - glad they got you sorted out. smile
