Hi all,

Bought a MK1 1.8i a few months back, which I'm absolutely loving. Generally it's in very good nick, the one thing that detracts are the wheels - I'm not keen on the design and they are scuffed half to death.

I'm thinking of treating myself to a new set for Xmas, can anyone recommend any good ones? I'm keen to keep the handling as it is, so not sure I want to go any bigger than 14"-15".

Cheers

15 inch is what to go for not only are they optimum for handling but they are the cheapest size for tyres with a very wide range available.

Go for the lightest wheels you can find with in your budget, ideal world Volks / RAYS then OZ Ultraleggera or some ROTAS are lightweight as well.

Look at Enkei or Kosei too...

There's a huge variety of wheels for the MX5 about as the 4x100 PCD is common with Honda, Rover and many others.

Agree that 15" is the right size for choice and cheapness of rubber too.

I always thought that 14s were the perfect size for the MX5, the panasports in particular being about the best you could get.

Mine has 15" Mazdaspeed MS-01R wheels - they have grown on me but the lacquer has peeled and they look a bit tatty.

I think a set of Watanabe's would look fantastic, I am almost tempted to buy a set. Almost wink

Thanks for all the suggestions, greatly appreciated.

My car is silver, so it's a bit more difficult to match wheels I think. As soon as I've got some sorted I'll post some pics.

There was a nice Desmond wheel called a Regamaster Evo. The advantage of them is the saving on unsprung weight - I think they were only about 4kg each. They're hard to come by in this country (made in Russia I think) but there are some for sale now and again and they were available in 14"/15" with the right offset (ET45) and stud pattern (4x100). Spoon did a wheel that was the same design (sorry, can't recall the name) but heavier.

This site is good for rare Japanese-fit wheels and might be worth keeping an eye on if you're prepared to wait for shipping: ICB Motorsport

There are lots of cool wheels that are popular in Japan but fairly uncommon on the roads here. Try searching for GAB, Racing Hart, Volk, Desmond, Panasport.
