I think the RX7 and MX5 split was very good. The RX7 had the high performance, and also had the tantrums that go with that. The MX5 just serves up no-frills driving experience - it doesn't need more power.

Sticking a big engine under the bonnet goes against the original (and excellent) concept - leave more power to the aftermarket. Remember putting the bigger engine variant on sale would undermine the smaller engine cars, and move the MX5 into a market segment it couldn't claim to be king.

Bring back a loopy RX7 to take it's own slant on the performance car class, would be my opinion.

I cant see them dropping the rx-8 its residuals are still very strong and I would imagine its got a lot of sales from people opting out of company car schemes and wanting a sports car but needing 4 doors. Id like to see a new rx-7 though, cutting the rx8 chassis and bolting a turbo to the engine couldnt be too difficult could it? Or would it have to be a proper uber car like the new skyline and supra etc.?

Why would it not be possible to offer both?

For example Mazda must have tested the 256bhp 2.3L engine from the MPS range in the MX5? This would make the MX5 much more focused to drive and offer the performance that so many people say that it needs. Shouldn't be costly and proven technology must make this is probability.

In regards the RX7 I personaaly feel that Mazda should re-introduce it - but it would be risk. One of the main appeals of the original was the fact that it was a little bit loopy, but certainly had the performance and most definately the looks to be a sucess. Remember though the RX7 was introduced in a time when the performance figures it offered were seriously competitive at all levels and the number of competitors were limited. Now it seems all marques offer a performance line of vehicles that provide great bang for your buck motoring without any of the usual 'supercar niggles'.

Therefore, in my opinion any new RX7 must offer...
Performance With Reliability - 350bhp + Turbo Rotary Engine (With comprehensive dealer warranty!!)
0-60 Sub 5 Seconds 170MPH + to be competitive
Looks - Beautiful Coupe Shape and 2 seats only
Price - ? Sub £40000

Just my opinion guys blabla
