i contacted AON who confirmed that they couldnt insure under 25s, but they have a partner company called firebond who can insure anyone over 21.

i gave my details and got quite a shock from the quote:
im 21
TPFT
kept on the drive in bristol
10k miles per year
estimated market value of £2000
£100 excess
on a classic policy so they dont need my no claims (even though i have 4 years)

and the quote was:

£395.55

thats £160 cheaper than A-plan were able to do! and i think its actually cheaper than i would have got on my Ka!!!!

so if you are 21 it might not be a bad idea to give them a ring. their number is 0870 444 0556

Is that on a Eunos or a MX5?

When I was looking last spring, No-one would touch me on a Eunos, which meant I had to look for UK car, which in the end was the thing that prevented my buying one.

You say you contacted AON and they insured you with a sister company. AON are a broker, so surely they gave you lots of quotes to choose from?....

Firebond is also a broker wink
Remember, brokers have a target audience - in AON's case they don't want anyone under 25yo and aren't cheap for anyone under 30.
Other brokers such as Admiral target younger, higher risk drivers and aren't good for older drivers.

Which country are we talking here? England? I thought AON were mainly into business insurance, rather than personal lines & car insurance. I know they do a lot of personal lines in Ireland.

The MX-5 OC club insurance scheme is through AON.
They also do specialist insurance for classic cars.

Ah! Very interesting. Does anyone know which country this is operated from (the AON insurance that is).

Confession as to why i'm so curious: I actually work for a company that supplies software to AON throughout the world. I'm responsible for supporting 13 AON sites with said software in Europe, so when i buy the '5, i might be able to pull a few strings and speak to the right person for an "employee" discount. smile

Staff discount is quite difficult to get your hands on, I'm afraid.
Aon (UK) is based entirely in the UK - you never have to deal with anyone in any other country.
The best guys to contact are the Dudley office, who run the Mazda scheme. Their number is 08705 70 80 90.
Any problems, email me at jack.holroyde@aon.co.uk and i'll look into it for you.

Cheers Jack, when i get the MX5 in the next few weeks i'll certainly be calling. I actually do a lot of work with Aon Trade Credit in London. But looks like i don't need to utilise that now! wink

I'm 22 years old and they wouldnt insure my mk1 '96 UK car on a classic policy- until I was 25..

I'll be going with Elephant instead, fully comp, for £500.

I had all sorts of trouble trying to get my 5 insured.. if i could find a company who would insure a 22 year old on a mk3 i'd be doing well - then when you explain that you have mods on the car, nobody at all wanted to know frown

I've ended up going with Adrian Flux at about £725, thats with 5 years no claims as well frown
