Hi All,

We recently bought an Anniversary MX-5 from a fellow P'Her and it's fantastic.

However, one of the areas that's letting it down is the condition of the alloys. They're not kerbed, but have clearly taken stone chips to the lacquer and there is now white spiders webbing present under the lacquer.

This makes the polished alloys look pants.

Has anyone ever had their Anniversary alloys re-furbed? Is it simply a matter of stripping the lacquer off them and then polishing/re-lacquering? Is there an alternative? Can they be dipped and chromed, or does chrome powdercoat now look good enough?

You thoughts/advice is welcome.

Thanks
Matt

There was a recall on these when the cars were new. I had all mine replaced by Mazda under warranty but I guess that will have well expired by now. It was a problem with the thickness of the chrome finish and lacquer and Mazda had them all refinished.

Not sure who could do them now for you but it gives you a bit more background into the car. Fab car Tho. Wish I could have kept mine. (no 7352 from memory!)

Spidering under the lacquer is inevitable on polished/lacquered wheels. Most manufacturers that got stung by warranty issues reverted to a paint finish in the end.

There is a local firm (Southam) who can replicate a polished/chrome finish which is quite convincing and hard wearing if you want to preserve the originality of the car.
I'll find their number for you.

Thanks mate! Would be great if you can dig the number out. It's really the one area where the car is being let down.

Cheers

My 10AE is on its 3rd set of alloys, all replaced under warrenty. They are reknowned for corroding so god only knows why Mazda decided to put them on the Trilogy model too!

You don't say where you are but a local club member recently had his Mk3 alloys refurbed at this place

http://www.wheelrefurbishing.com/index.htm

He said they do the wheels for Porsche UK so they must be fairly decent, he was chuffed with the results anyway.

I need mine doing too so if you don't find anywhere and get them done post up the results!
