Finally got the beast in for a cambelt change (hoorah!) and cheekily asked for an oil change on the day.

Allon White (Morgan and Lotus specialists) gave me excellent service and charged £294 for cambelt service (I supplied the cambelt £15) and oil change (I supplied the filter and sump plug) including 3.6l of 10w/40 semi synthetic.

Does this sound reasonable to you - I think I paid a bit of premium personally but it was worth having it done by a sports car specialists and they gave me excellent customer service e.g. phone calls to give me progress updates, discussion with mechanic etc.

Mine was £225 + VAT at Sam Goodwin, so circa £265 inc VAT.

In other words, the price you paid seems in the right ball park. It was still way less than most franchised MX-5 dealers would charge too.

Freelance Mazda in Chatham charges 160+VAT for a cambelt change IIRC.

Remove the cam cover, front plastic and airbox and the job would have cost you £15 wink
