how old does an mx5 need to be to be covered by a classic policy?
can a eunos be insured this way (to get around higher 'jap import' insurance?
has anyone got a 'modified' (as in go faster not tttish plastic) mx5 insured ton a classic/low mileage policy?

as part of my long term plan i am wondering about binning off the MCS getting a (2.0d) focus estate for the wife and actually travelling and getting an mx5 for c£2k and maybe doing some tracks (i am enthusiastic rather than gifted!). and for the missus to go to work on a sunny day!

for this to be plausible it'd have to be a 1.8 i guess..?

and ideally it'd be that maritime type colour!

(i get the train to work and hope to move to a village where i will still get the train. ergo we don't NEED two cars so i'd want to keep the costs of the 'unecessary' car down as much as poss - hence thoughts of an mx5).

and i clearly don't care about 'gayness' because i have a BINI!

I had AON limited-mileage classic insurance on my 2001 MX-5 last year but I haven't bothered this year. I was limited to 5k miles which I struggled (failed) to keep down to but it only actually saved me about £20 over the standard AON MX-5 OC offer (which is an "everyday classic" special insurance).

AON give you the first 5 trackdays each year free of charge and after that it's £40 a day. During the track day the excess goes to £1500 or 10% of car value.

I also do trackdays and have a very modded (not chaved up) car:
2001 Mk2.5 1.8 Sport in Eternal Red with AC
MP62 Supercharger
TDR Intercooler
J&S Knock Sensor
eManage piggy-back ecu
320cc Supra green-top injectors
AEM Uego O2 sensor

Dyno'd at 215bhp - 175lb/ft but that was before the eManage & 320cc Injectors were fitted and last weekend I swapped the 105mm crank pulley with a 120mm one so the boost has gone from 8psi to about 10psi so the new estimate is 240bhp and 200lb/ft driving

that's interesting - 'classic' insurance on a 6 year old car! so all mk1 cars would be 'classicable'?

just to check - it would be in my name as my only car with no ncb (but that's okay because i am 27 so it shouldn't be too bad) but i could still do limited mileage on a car like this (it's just nowhere near the saving of if it were the second car insured in my name).

Ask AON for a quote for both limited mileage classic insurance and their OC Club Everyday Classic insurance.

Personally I'd suggest that limited mileage insurance probably won't save you much and that you'll probably use the car more than you think you will.

Why third party only? At 35 fully comp couldn't be much more!

I'm paying £180ish for a classic policy on my '92 car. Fully comp (but you can't earn NCB) and limited to 5000miles. The only mods are wheels, roll bar and race seat - none of which affected the premium. I'm with Richardson Hoskin.

great that's broadly the sort of set up i am interested i'd be interested in working toward. i probably don't have the abilities to race but that's the sort of set up i'd like for some quick road/track.

thanks for the info chaps.

ive only crashed once in 18 years, so the chance of me being in an acident of my fault is, i think slim (or is it my turn?). The cost of full comp may only be an extra £100 but the overall cost of claming could be about £1,000 by the time you pay your £300 exess and the loose you full NCB over the next five years. I only gave 2k for the car so I'll take my chances.

my '97 mk1 is on "classic" been that way since I got it 1.5 years ago. Its not so much the car has to be a classic car, more limited in many ways, i.e. only insured overnighg if garaged, can't be used to commute, can't go over 3000 miles per year, must prove you own a "main car" in which your the policy holder, must be over 25 years of age (you not the car), you don't build up ncb etc

The last thing isn't an issue as I've just deceded to get a 3rd car as a new daily driver and I got offered 4 years free NCB on it just telling them my situation.

this is my downfall. our main (nee only!) car is registered in my name (i paid for most of it (!) but it's insured in the wife's name because she uses it for work. ergo i can't claim that the mazda/westfield/944 is my second car i guess. c0cking hell.

sounds interesting! the thing is for me (no ncb) i am not sure i could make this work (financially) even on a real crapper.
