Mazda goes for the record, again
MX-5 in the record books
Having already claimed the MX-5 is an Icon with a special edition model this summer, Mazda has decided to re-establish itself as a world record holder.
In May 2000, Mazda’s MX-5 was given the record for being the world's top selling lightweight, open-top, two-seat sports car for total sales of 531,890 since launch some 11 years earlier.
However, as of this year Mazda has shifted a fair few more than that – the running total currently stands at over 800,000 - so they’re reapplying for their own record.
All of this comes nearly 18 years after the MX-5 was first released, which means that they’ve sold a staggering 44444.4 MX-5s every year and a bewildering 121.8 every day since the 1989 launch.
Discussion
For those who want a small engined two seater convertible it must be said that there is no competition. The MX5 will not beat any quick performance records however, you must praise the reliability, style, quality and comfort of such a good looking car which was based on the Lotus Elan sprite. You could'nt state reliability with the Lotus.
Just wish these manufacturers would stop bringing out these limited editions when sales are flagging.

My mother in law has one, I had the chance to drive it. They dont look half bad, driving position was brilliant, just as you would expect from a "roadster" like this, not bad interior, japanese reliability all good so far. Put my foot down... and... erm...... not that quick are they.
Im sure there are plenty of rocket-ship ones out there that have been lovingly prepared for track-days etc and go like the proverbial-off-a-shovel.
In standard form though, bit more poke under the bonnet wouldnt do them any harm would it?

In terms of looking like a 4x4 you can lower the suspension with a dealer fit option and it looks much better.
They'll need to add a faster version to the line-up though if they are to compete with the BMW Z2 when that appears.
The great thing about this car is you get a huge amount of individuality and fun for your money.

depends weither you dropped a cog or 2 and got the revs upto about 4.5k before planting your foot...and no, they aint rocket ship quick, but much of the speed can be carried through the corners, which is the whole point.
Yeah, I guess they're a good little sports car - the early ones were a bit purer I suppose, but not overly inspiring
How can they sell an additional 60% (approx)in that time scale? - I mean, - they're not that good!
Sadly, an awful lot of them are driven by the 'Blue-Rinse Brigade', many of whom don't know the true meaning of being 'driven round the bend' - or maybe they do..... (appealing to older married male victims here!)

Are they implying that the mk3 is a continuation of the excellent (British designed) mk 1 & 2? and therefore the volumes are still rising??
isn't that like saying they the Issigonis mini is still selling like 'hot cakes' just cos its got the same name surely it does count as the same car any more?
