Should I?

I'm a 20 year old male who's driving history has thus far been restricted by an over-protective father (who himself refuses to drive a car with less than 300BHP..), and I'm thinking of buying a pretty tired MK1 MX-5 and nursing it back to health. This would be my first sports car, and as a student, would involve spending every penny I have. The cars I've been looking at have all done around 100,000 miles, but seem to be mechanically sound. I'm no mechanic, the most ive ever done to a car is change a set of brakes and basic service stuff - but i know the basics, I'm eager to learn and I have a lot of tools!
So does this sound like a reasonable thing for a guy with no money and no experience to do? (Please say yes..)

You might as well, lets face it if you're really strapped for cash you can always whore your body for medical research!

Seriously though, do it. They're so easy to work on, typical Japanese reliability so you won't actually *have* to work on it that much, but will probably want to when you see all the tweaks and touches you can do. And they're awesome little cars.

as long as you do your research beforehand and are sensible you shoudnt have any problems. the basic ones (like mine) are so cheap that it seemed stupid not to get one.

My brother got his MX5 about 3 or 4 years ago, he is 27 and he loves it to bits! He has driven to Poland and back, through Germany etc. He tells me all the Polish women loved it! His is an M reg, 1.8 manual, it seemed quite quick the only time I drove it!
