It occurred to me the other day when giving the car a good clean, that the exhaust on my 5 comes off the backbox at an angle, and straight out, but isnt supported against the bodywork or bumper.

I would have thought that the exit pipe would weigh a fair bit and would need to be supported but there appears to be no evidence of any such fittings.

Is it just mine, or is the exit pipe not supported on any Mk1 5's?

No, there shouldn't be any hangers on the tail-pipe.

When I had my Mk1 1 (from new) I wanted to fit a bigger back-box but couldn't justify it until it started rusting so every time I washed the car I made sure a bit of water "accidentally" made it's way in through the tail-pipe.
7 years later and the bloody thing was still spotless!
I still see the car around sometimes and it still has the original back box.

they do last for ages... one on mine looks origonal (its 12 years old) back box is fine, but the exit pipe has rusted off... fell off last night on the way home from work

Sounds good !

Is there much difference between that and the 100mm single ? I'm not sure which to go for as I've heard that the 76mm looks a bit small compared to the bumper cut out ? Never seen any decent pictures to compare and make my own mind up though !

The 100mm tip fills the exhaust cutout nicely.
When it stops raining I'll take a picture for you.

the tail pipe that just dropped off had an approx 60mm exit, the cut out in the bumper is about 5" (120mm)

have a look through the MX5oc forum, there might be some pictures on there smile (cant find any off hand)

Sorry for the delay.

Here's a pic of the 100mm larini exhaust.

It looks loads better in the flesh, photo doesn't really do it justice

  • *Edit***

Thanks for that ! Looks good !

Do you have any problems with the heat affecting the bumper ? It looks to be quite a close fit ?
