I'm very keen to get me a fine little mazda however i am concerned about bootsizes... are there any particular cars with bigger / smaller boots? I would need to be able to fit a couple of large rucksacks in the thing if possible...
I did look at one on the weekend and it looked pretty small to me... can any nice fellows in here please advise...
ps.
I want a green one with a wooden steeringwheel

I can fit a full set of golf clubs still in the bag in the boot of my Mk2.5 and they used to fit in my old Mk1 too. The only club I have to remove is the driver but that still fit's in the boot next to the bag.
I get a weeks shopping in there and also enough camping equipment for a long weekend away for two people

It is surprising what you can squeeze in a '5, I moved flat from Bristol to Edinburgh in mine and managed it in 2 trips (no furniture).
The boot is a bad shape what with the well at the bottom and the spare wheel but you can easily pack to compensate using soft bags etc.
There is a surprising amount of usable space on the rear shelf too, particularly if the top is up although I have secured things there top down using bungies on a few occasions too.

All Mk1/2 have the same width boot with the same size opening.
The Mk1 has a deeper boot than the Mk2 as they moved the spare into the base of the boot. More space can be made in both shapes by leaving the spare wheel at home and carrying a can of tyre weld instead. This is easier in the Mk1 as in the Mk2 the boot carpet is shaped to go over the spare wheel whereas in the Mk1 in goes under it.
Personally I preferred the shape of the Mk1 boot. Yes it's an awkward shape but if you are just carrying a few bags in there they don't roll around like they do in the Mk2. Also the Mk2 boot is only just wine-bottle height so you have to make sure wine bottles are not standing upright before closing the bootlid
