Does anyone do anything interesting with there '5 ?
Discussion
Hello all,
Posting this because over the last couple of weeks it seems this forum has become a bit quiet, particularly of what people are doing with their 5's - it's turning into a 'where's the best place to get' - which is valid but it would be nice to have some other interesting things too! (the gentleman with the 'snit rocket' often posts interesting things)
Anyway - probably shouldn't have a moan and say nothing - so today I'm off to get some paint mixed up to have a go at spraying my tired Eunos' blue paintwork. Only picked up the spraygun the other day and red-oxided the sills in the door shuts (I had crumbly stuff at both ends of my kick plates, so cleaned off, friend welded small hole, now doing the remedial). Boot lid will be next to suffer the paint!
Good news is I have a 20 mile drive to get there, it's sunny and it's mostly along country lanes! Hoorah!

It has gone very quiet in here , a combination on good weather and roundabouts is the cause of the downfall in posting i reckon
well apart from blatting about like a complete tool , ive ...
fitted a set of dowton retro mirrors...
fitted the toast rack back on (not sure i like it though)
and fitted an led so i can find the sodding ignition it the dark
today ive partly dynamatted the front doors and tomorrow im fitting me old Alpine MRV-400 amp to power the door speakers and 6x9's on the rear shelf.

So far I have:
- replaced the Recaro bucket for a standard Mk.1 seat (although it is still the wrong type with separate seatbelt stalk)
- wired up the headrest speakers (although the pass. seat ones are much louder!)
- Had a full service (all belts and fluids sorted)
- Flushed and refilled with fully synth to sort the HLA rattle
- 4 wheel align
- Fitted a mesh grille to protect the radiator
- washed, claybared, Megs 3 staged, and Renovo'd the roof
- thrashed the nuts off it
Still to do: new back box due to loose baffle, sort seats/speakers...

Ive still yet to do my belts oil changes etc , but apart from when i 1st got the car ive not had any HLA noise at all , it does mention in the sh it had a top end rebuild at 89k , really must get my arse in gear and get it all done - replaced the Recaro bucket for a standard Mk.1 seat (although it is still the wrong type with separate seatbelt stalk)

Mine had done very little mileage in the last 8 years and still been serviced at 12k so at one point went nearly 4 years between services
Decided it was best to check everything - engine/gearbox/diff oil all changed, cambelt done, coolant and brakes checked and ok, etc.
HLA noise still terrible so had it flushed for fully synth on thursday and touch wood is much better so far!

But in that 4 years it had done only a few thousand miles - sadly they changed the oil based on miles and not on time intervals hence the top end getting sludgy...
Gave it a proper Italian tune-up today and I can confirm it is running much more nicely with fully synth in.
Just over 80k km on in now (about 50k miles). And I've done more in the last 3 months than it did in the previous 5 years!

I've fitted a pair of Lotus Elise seats in my car. Bought them for £100! They are less comfortable than the big heated Mk2.5 MX5 seats but I'm now sitting much lower and with way more leg-room (more than I need and I'm +6ft). There is even more space under the seats so I've moved my stereo amp from the boot to under the drivers seat
I've bought an eManage Blue and AEM WB O2 + gauge and also an FM twin-cooler which will be going on as soon as they arrive.
Once they are all fitted & tuned and I'm happy that it's running well and most importantly, safely I'll get a high-flow intake manifold (not sure at the mo whether to go for the old BRP R4/SOT HFI or the new FFS adapted coldside manifold).
Once that's fitted I'll run it like that for a while until I'm happy that it's safe and running well again before adding a bigger pulley to up the boost a bit. I have a modest target of 250bhp which should be fairly easy to hit.
On April 6 I drove on the track at Bedford on the full GT circuit with Lotus on Track. It was a fantastic day and the driving standards were impecable. I found my car was almost exactly the same around that track as an S1 Elise and Honda Civic Type R
Yesterday I was at Curborough with the OC. At the time I left I was second fastest out of about 25 on the second layout (2 clockwise laps of the short circuit).
On 30 June I'm off to Surrey rolling Road with Cobham Commoners (local MX-5 club), at the end of July I'm going to Llandow with the OC and in August I'm going back to Bedford with Lotus on Track and sharing the driving with a mate
So yes, I'd say I'm doing a few interesting things with my '5

Ragged mine round Kent for 4 hours today - does that count as something interesting?
(although the HLA noise keeps coming back at times )
Yes, that is in!(although the HLA noise keeps coming back at times )
Mine had HLA noise in Tescos car park Sat lunchtime, not done it for a while, but it's stopped doing it now! It was after the little thing had lost a be-stickered Mk 2 MR2, so I guess it was feelign a bit tired!
Thanks to all for posting including pics! I'll try and get some pics of mine so far, after a spending spree in Kett Autopaints (Peterborough and unbeilievably helpful) I have all the paint and materials to do the whole car (will do it a section at a time since I am a total beginner...)
Anyway, back is looking a little naked with boot lid removed, and the lights and rear numberplate panel, all wet n dried up ready to apply some paint! Filled the holes for the rear Eunos badge and also the front one (which has been missing for some months since some toe-rag removed it) - I'll be going de-badged methinks!

The next job I have to do on our Eunos is repair a rusty bit in the sill front of the rear passenger wheel.
I've got no idea on how to go about it though
I had this - on the Eunos witht eh chrome (prob stainless steel kickplates) - over time the edge wore through the paint inder the plate and then I believe it was an electrolytic action at either end of both kickplates. The driver side rotted to a small quarter inch hole (took a few years to get to this mind). Haven't got a welding set at the moment so a friend just filled the hole with a mig, ground it back and now I'm repainting that bit. Is your rust in the same position? It's a pretty easy repair in truth. Only thing is I've bent the sill plates getting them off...I've got no idea on how to go about it though
had no time to mess with my car recently but been driving it alot. Its not boosting properly at the minute only running 6 psi (should be 10psi) had a good cross country balst following an 06 sti scooby, the gap between us didn't change at all so its not too slloow.
Its booked in first week of July for its 2nd map with the big fuel rail and higher octance more knock resistant fuel, knock dependant it'll go up to 13 psi and i'm sure be suitably rapid.
Only other thing is I've got a Harddog Ace roll bar coming some time soon, hopefully should stiffen the car up a bit.

Which speakers did you put in the headrest? - and did you already have the wiring looms or did you have to do the whole shebang...?.. only ask as I'm about to do the same thing on my '5'- replaced the Recaro bucket for a standard Mk.1 seat (although it is still the wrong type with separate seatbelt stalk)
