In terms of the best 5's, I think the consensus is:
Mk1
Mk2.5
Mk3
Mk2
In that order. Depending on what you want from the car, of course.

Personally I think now having lived with a MK1 as my only car i'd want one of the later editions for the nicer interior. That said if it's puerly the sporty drive your after get a MK1.
In answer to the first question, yes of course the Mk3 MX-5 is worth buying!
Whether it's worth buying over a Mk1/2/2.5 is a different matter and is purely a matter of personal taste.
Each new version of the MX-5 became softer and less focused but also became a better car and a nicer place to be. If you just want a bit of fun you can't go wrong with a Mk1 but if you want more comfort go for a Mk2 or Mk2.5. If you are more interested in comfort than driver appeal then go for the Mk3. Yes the Mk3 will have just as much or more grip as the previous versions and will be a very good drive and will offer plenty of response & feedback but as you go back through the previous versions you will find less comfort and more driver appeal.
However, if you prefer the look of a Mk2/2.5 but the feel of a Mk1 it's pretty easy to do. My Mk2.5 is way more responsive than any stock Mk1 and just as good as any modified Mk1 with a bit more refinement but also a bit more weight due to the uprated shocks/springs/arbs/roll-bars!
It's not worth arguing about which version is best as it's purely a matter of personal taste. I'm petty sure though that a Mk1 (I'd say 95+ 1.8S) is the best value MX-5 you can get.

Strange as I thought my Mk2 is nicer to drive and easier to go quickly in than my Mk1. The Mk2 was easier to get sideways too as it had a bloody good LSD as standard.Mk1
