I've got a lovely little Mk1 1.8i UK car but it's due for a cambelt service... I don't know anyone in the city and I wondered if anyone could reccommend a good garage. I'm expecting it to be pricey so I'd definitely like to take it to a good specialist if possible rather than a main dealer.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you :-)

There was a good backstreet chap I used to go called Andy at Lyndon Motors in Acocks Green. He services anything with an engine and looked after my dad's MX-5. Proper bloke in a lockup stuff, not a pot plant in sight, but he knows his stuff!

I used Sam Goodwin in Nuneaton for my cambelt service so that isn't far to drive from Birmingham.

I was driving from Blackpool to Bristol when I had mine done and just stopped half way. The work was excellent as was the service.

He ran me into town and recommended some things to do so I didn't have to wait in the garage for hours and he enthusiastically told me about the '5s he had worked on. He also showed me all the portfolios of his E-Type restorations - a really good car guy.

MAZTEK IN TELFORD!

Bloody excellent. I drive from Dorset to get my car done with him, and I know of others that so the same. Honest, won't rip you off and knows 5s inside and out. And he does a quality job.

And if he gives you advice, listen to him! Seen too many people ignore him then come bleating back to him with tales of woe and problems that he has to put right.

And you wanna see the engine and bay of his Le Mans. And you wanna see it GO!

Do allow a bit of time for him to fit you in though. My conversation went something like "You've been recommended to me as an MX5 garage when could you fit me in. In about 6 months. Ah.....not next week then"

Yeah, he can get busy. But it's worth calling him to see if he can fit you in.

If you do get it done, (and I'm sure the 5 specialists would do it anyway, but in case you use a normal garage) - for the slight extra expense it's worth getting the two idler rollers changed at the same time.

I did my cam belt when I had to change the water pump. If you're half mechanically inclined, it's not all that hard to do yourself - allow a couple to three hours.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I got it all sorted at Maztek last week and I will definitely be going back.
