Popping and Farting!!!!!!!
Discussion
Hi, basically I want to find out what makes a car's exhaust "pop" when on the over-run??? have a mate with a monaro vxr 500, which does it (very loudly) when he comes off the throttle, so how does it happen? i know it is something to do with unburnt fuel igniting on the exhaust, but surely his cat should stop this??????????????
So how does it happen guys???? and how can i make my mx-5 do it

My car pops on overrun but only because it's over-fuelling. I'll be fitting an EMB soon which will allow me to control the fuelling (and ignition timing) much better which should stop the popping.
I'm keen to get rid of it because while it sound good it means there is unburnt fuel in my exhaust which is bad for the cat, bad for my wallet and bad for power output - I'd rather be using fuel to make the car go than to make popping noises!
If the fuelling & timing are correct the exhaust note becomes more aggressive anyway so you win some and you lose some.

The pops are unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Like you I have a 1.8 converted car with the 1.6 ECU. So, your car will over fuel already. I have a de-cat and twin exit with no silencers atall. This pops and bangs alot Im fitting a silenced de-cat so you can buy my de-cat if you want one! Email me
