Mx5 selling - has interest dropped?
Discussion
Hi,
I've got a N plate, 1996 BRG, 1.8 litre, 83,000 mile car. It's in great condition except for a parking scratch on the rear bumper and with a new hood and tyres, I thought it would be very easy to sell. I was asking £2950 and now dropped to £2850 in Autotrader and have only had one viewing in 2 weeks.
Is the scratch likely to be putting people off as I think this is a bargain compared to others and is the sought after 1.8?
Incidentally, the couple who came to se it asked no questions and on coming back in the car, advised me that they had lots to look at that weekend and viewed mine first as it was close. They seemed like "test pilots" familiarising themselves with an Mx5.
What am I doing wrong - any advice appreciated please!

Assuming the cars clean/tidy and doesn't smell then it could just be that your really reallly ugly?
Seriously though your car will have to be better than the competition, and as theres lots of MX5's out there there is lots of competition. Has it got 12 months MOT, Service history, 12 months tax, recent service? Plus we are now over 10 years old and over 80,000 miles so with peoples 100,000 mile block in their heads it's only got 2 years life in it.

Just to add - yes you will get 'Test Pilots'. That is exactly what I need to do, having never even sat in one, Im gonna have to go check some out. Yes, there is a chance I will buy the first one I see, but not much...
Buyers market for these I think, can afford to be choosy. Great news for me!

Yes, I am really, really ugly, but hell, it's th car they're buying not me. I realised at an early age that I wouldn't be able to sell for much.
I remember buying it 2 years ago and for BRG 1.8l, it was the case that any good one at a decent price had sold by the tim I called and that was May.
What's your opinion folks, I'm tempted to drop price to £2700. Below this price, it's not worth me selling as I don't need to replace it other than I want another car.

Just sold my mates 1991 1.6 UK car, red, full history, new mohair roof, tidy not mint.
Had it up at £2195 and thought I'd be inundated with calls...
I had 5 calls in the first week, first viewer knew nothing, asked nothing.
Second guy bought it for £2000 which I think was a bargain really.
I think there are loads about so price is key.
I'd touch the scratch up or get a couple of quotes from Chipsaway type places.
Also BRG isn't one of the more popular colours although yours sounds sensibly priced.
Post up the ad lets have a look.

Hi folks.
It should be the first one to come up on here:

I was specifically after BRG which made it harder to hunt one down. I do agree, I'm not a fan of white and wouldn't consider one.
I'm tempted to go down to £2700 next wek if it doesn't go by then. Its' a good car though, so I'm going to keep it if I can't get that much and I'll have a fun second car. If I sell it for a silly price in October after the summer, I wont feel too bad!

When selling my old Mk2 I had a few time-wasters, then someone who had never been in one bought it. I find that putting a lot of time in polishing it helps loads. If it looks shiney and the wheels look nice and mint, then it should sell itself. Just be patient.
And touch up the scratch...professionally I might add.

IMHO, it is not the 1.8 as much as the 1.8iS that is the sought after UK car as the S is pretty well specced up for a UK car (power windows, mirrors, abs etc etc)
BRG is a good colour for re-sale on these, I like the original wheels too.
As for your car ad, the bumper needs repairing for sure, also the paint looks flat, spend a few days getting a solid shine on it, clean the roof and take good new pics with the roof and windows down but have one with the roof up to show it is in fine shape.
Good luck with the sale.
