Thought I'd better get my act sorted out and finally make a post to PistonHeads.

I've got a British MX5 Mk1 SE and I'd be interested if there was anyone else out there with the same model, and finding out what (subtle) mods you have made to the car. I would appreciate advice on any great driving roads within a short distance of South London too.

I was thinking of getting one of the small chin spoilers for the front, as I had heard that Mazda originally planned to put these on the original car, but they got dropped for cost cutting reasons. Do they make much difference?

Hope someone can enlighten me…

Welome!

I've no experience of the SE I'm afraid, I've always gone for a Eunos. I've had cars with the front lip spoiler and others without. I can't say I noticed any difference in terms of how the cars drove, but from a cosmetic standpoint I like the spoiler. I suppose the vents in it might do something to aid brake cooling but who knows...!

In terms of other mods, does your SE have the chassis bracing underneath? Might be a worthwhile and simple mod. I'm sure others will be along with more ideas soon.

Cheers Risotto,

Are the chassis braces something that I could do easily myself, or would I need to put the car up on ramps to do it properly?

It is something that I have been meaning to look at, as I have seen other people mention that it is a relatively inexpensive mod that gives the most difference. The only slight concern I have is that it may have a detrimental effect to the ride of the car.

You can get some pretty elaborate ones like this:

but there are much simpler versions that were standard fit on JDM cars that consist of little more than a single tube front and rear (the front one of these is also fitted to the car in the above pic in addition to the big aftermarket brace).

If you don't have them already, the standard ones would be a good starting point:

You would need to get the car on ramps or over a pit but fitting is a doddle.

Thanks, those pics are a great help. I'd better make friends with someone who has some ramps!
