I have a 2022 MX-5 which I love and will probably keep for a long time. It is low mileage and looks like new. Questions:

How good was the ND rust protection? I know previous generation MX-5s had a reputation for rust.

Should I get mine professionally treated or is the factory treatment good enough for now?

Does anyone have any experience of companies like Rustec?

I want to do the 'right' thing but don't want to spend thousands and don't want to have to keep getting it rewaxed or whatever every year.

Just want to make sure it is well protected now and renew as required maybe every five years or so.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I got mine done at 6 months old by a company called pro-tect services down past Milton Keynes.

They don't seem to be around any more, though.

They provided various paperwork for when I come to sell, and - the key thing for me - *lots* of photos of the underside as it was being done. It was a proper job. Wax in all the cavities, including the doors, everything that shouldn't be undercoated wrapped and protected, underbody plastics removed to expose the floor / wheel wells, etc., and everything that should be coated thoroughly coated.

It wasn't cheap, but it gave me piece of mind. It was done six years ago now, and there's a little bit of rust starting to show on the front subframe welds, but that's it.

Should also mention - I attacked my import NA with Dinitrol wax in the chassis legs and cills, and with POR15 over the subframes and wishbones. But, without a ramp and experience, it was messy, not much fun, and nowhere as thorough a job. It was still looking solid when I sold that car three years later, though.

The problem is that it does need re applying every so often, maybe if it were a fine weather garage queen you could expect a good product to last at least 5 years but if it were used all year round you could probably half that.
Its a messy horrible job i have done multiple times but crawling around on the floor is no fun.
I have heard of costs of £1000 ish to do the job properly which makes diy seem a lot more appealing.
The chap Anand Viad is talked about a lot in the Mx5 world, not sure what his company is called.

OP, how do you use the car? As a weekend, hobby, summer only car? Garaged when not in use?
Or as a daily all weather. This makes a massive difference.
Fair weather only and garaged, it will last a long time as is.

Thanks for the updates.

I do 2-3000 miles a year and car lives on the drive. It's not a daily driver, more a couple of times a week driver.

I'm not a DIYer so count that out.

I want to take 'reasonable' care of it without being obsessive.

Another factor, as discussed on the MX-5 owners' club site, is whether you are in the regular winter salting zone, or are in the south, plus do you live on the coast or inland?

Berkshire.

Generally the car won't be driven in really bad weather as work from home and have other options. But it's not a garage queen either.

Sounds like it needs some protection then.
I can recommend J R Classics near Doncaster. I bit of a trek, but Joe does a good job.
Used him twice now.
Long waiting times though.
Specify Dinitrol over regular Waxoyl, costs more, but it's a better product.
