Having a bit of a panic about my alarm.

I’ve a brand new 1 month old MX5

It was beeping at me earlier and I don’t know why. I was pressing every button on the key multiple times to sort it out

I think I sorted it

Anyway, now when I lock the car the indicator lights only flash once.

Is this right. For some reason I can’t remember and I thought they flashed more times than just once.

There is a red light flashing on the dash in the middle, but it’s not for long enough for me to see what it is but I think it’s the security indicator? I think it is anyway and I think this only means the immobiliser is set.

Does flashing light mean the alarm is set?

I’m worried I have somehow turned the alarm off on the car by my pressing of buttons on the key many times

Is it possible to permanently turn off the alarm on the car by pressing any of the buttons on the key in a fashion random number of times?

The car is currently locked, the hazard lights flashed once and there is a red light flashing on the dashboard.

How do I know if the alarm is set? I’m worried I’ve turned it off somehow.

Thanks for any help. It’s just another thing on a bad day I’ve been having and I’ve looked all over online and just can’t find the answer to a very simple question. Everything I found was for a different MX5 from 10+ years ago

TIA

The alarm is on. The red light is normal.

Lights flash once = alarm on
Lights flash twice = alarm off
Lights flash thrice = intrusion sensor off

Source = my RF.

Thank you for coming back to me. I feel much better now I know the alarm is on.

How do you get the lights to flash twice? Or do you mean they flash twice when I open the door and the alarm is disabled?

How do you get the lights to flash three times?

What is an intrusion sensor?

Your source - does that mean you have an MX5 RF?

Yeah, I've got a 2020 1.5 RF SportNav+ in Machine Grey.

I'm not actually sure how to lock the car and fully disable the alarm, sorry. Mine beeps when I lock/unlock and I've always just trusted that.

De-activating the intrusion alarm is useful if you leave a person or pet in the car, for example while you've nipped in to pay for petrol etc. A lot of cars will have some form of it - some people even think there's a problem with their alarm system when it's actually just a hanging air freshener, bottle of water or even loose change lying about inside, which then sets off the alarm.

If you lock the car with the roof down, then the Intrusion Sensor is deactivated by default. With the top closed, it's activated by default.

You can disable the Intrusion Sensor by pressing the bottom button on the remote quickly after locking the car.

So you're aware, I have had to change my key fob battery twice in 3 years - it's a CR2032 and you'll get a message on the dash when it starts to get low.

Nice car.
Mines an RF Homura also machine grey

Mines not beeping. I’m not sure if that’s right or not. Should it be beeping?

I’m not following what you mean by the intrusion sensor.
You also said something about the lights flushing three times to set the intrusion sensor? Not sure how you do that, but I’m not sure what the intrusion sensor is.

Thanks for the information about the key fob battery. Do you use your car most days?

Hmm, it might not beep by default but mines does.

You can make it beep by doing the following:
Switch the ignition off and close the doors.
Open the driver's door.
Within 30 seconds of opening the driver's door, press and hold the lock button on the key for at least 5 seconds.
You should hear a beep. If you press and hold the lock button again, then each time you press it, it'll get louder until it disables again.
Switch the ignition on or close the door and it'll save the beep setting.

Mine will auto-lock when I walk away, which is when the hazards flash once and it beeps. When I unlock the car it flashes twice and beeps.

OK, so if I go into a shop with the key in my pocket then the car will lock itself automatically. If there's a passenger in the car then the alarm will eventually go off. If I want to make sure the alarm doesn't go off then I'll press the bottom of the 4 buttons on the fob within a few seconds of the car auto locking.

I'll mess around with the key when I'm back home in the next few days, see if I can work out anything else. Oh, the passenger seat often thinks a bottle of water is a person so I usually keep the seat belt plugged in if there's anything on it. Otherwise it'll beep away at you.

I don't drive it every day, no - I use it to escape. Mostly it gets driven on days off, trips away and at the weekend when I head out to the coast. I got up at 5AM on Sunday and took it a top-down 280 mile trip round some smashing roads in the SW of Scotland.

The Homura is a great spec - congratulations.

Hi,
Okay, so I rang Mazda this morning
I’ve been into the settings and now when I lock the car, it beeps and when I open the car, it beeps
I’ve also set the walk away thing so when I walk away from the car after 2 m, the car lock itself. None of these things had been set when they drop the car off for me.
When I got the car, they said that the key will only work within 1 m of the car. they said this helps prevent the car being stolen off the driveway while I’m in the house with the key. Now that I’ve turned on the walkaway option, I’m assuming that still works in the same way?
So, going off what you’re saying I don’t think it’s going to like my handbag on the passenger seat is it, never mind a bottle of water.
So yours is a second car then? Nice.

The Homura is a great spec - congratulations.

Thank you smile

Mine locks within about 2m of walking away but I can still unlock it from my kitchen, which is further away. I keep my keys in the microwave (because I never actually use it) - it probably does very little to block the signal but they're in a basket in there anyway. It's also usually blocked in by another car and I doubt anyone would want to steal that. There haven't been any thefts or break-ins in my street for the 9 years I've been here either. If it bothers you, then you can buy a Faraday box or pouch from Amazon cheaply enough.

If you don't often have a passenger, slide that seat forward a bit and you can pop your handbag down the back. It'll stop it from moving about as much that way, plus keep it out of sight.

Oh, I got gingerbread scented screenwash because, for whatever reason, I can smell the screenwash when I use the jets and I don't like the smell of the normal stuff. Probably why I also keep snacks in the car now.

Ah, no my key won’t work if it’s more than 1m away from the car. I did check this with them as well so no need for a faraday pouch.. I hear you can try tinfoil also

No passengers sofar smile good tip about moving the seat forward

I haven’t used the screen wash yet I’ll be watching out for that though thanks
