Intermittent noise , possibly fuel pump, 2017 Mazda mx5
Discussion
Hi
I’m new to PH and not technical. I bought 2017 mx5 last may and love it. I have noticed an intermittent noise, I believe from the fuel pump because it come from the rear left of the car and the fuel filler is that side. It isn’t too loud and sound like a motor engaging for 1-2 seconds then stopping, then starting again after a few seconds. Car’s performance seems fine. Noise doesn’t seem relating to accelerating, coasting etc or fuel level in the tank. Any ideas or is it a trip to the garage (or is it normal). Thanks in advance! Paul

Does it only make the noise when the fuel level is low or is it always noisy when operating?
I think it's quite likely to be normal anyway, in a compact two-seater sports car you are sitting much closer to these sorts of gubbins and can notice sounds you wouldn't hear in other cars.
Seems to make it all the time, irrelevant of fuel level. Yes - minimal sound deadening so I will hear everything, you are right. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t about to go bang!! Did you manage to find the cause of the sound and whether it was anything to be concerned about, Paul? I’ve just got a 2016 MX5 and noticed a similar regular sound to what you have described.
