Winter Cover for MX5 nc
Discussion
Hi
My mx5 sits in the open air/rain on my drive. Even with a "fabsil'd" roof it does seem to get damp inside. (Rain doesnt bead on the roof) Wonder if anyone could recommend a cover to keep the rain out thats easy to get on/off. theres a chance someone could nick it as the car is out the front on the drive but chance I'll have to take I guess.
MX5Parts offer a couple of "full" covers, one of them maybe ok?
Thanks

I have tried a variety of covers on my Westfields and MX5's over the years. The wet under the fabric is often due to condensation, especially during the winter and if the car is not used regularly.
Even the 'breathable' covers won't solve this problem. The other issue with any cover used outside is the wind will make it rub the paintwork where it touches.
The best low cost solution is 3-4 layers of bubble wrap and a small cover with elastic at the corners that just covers the roof and windows. The bubble wrap solves the condensation issue, provided the roof is dry to begin with.
My current Mk1 track car is stored in a carcoon (outdoor version) which seems to address all the issues, with the compromise that it is a 15 minute job to get the car in or out so really for longer term storage.

I bought a cover from MX5 parts for my NC. The full one. It is not quick to remove as you will have to unclip the straps under the car, roll up and store.
But, if the car is standing for a while very good. i think it was about a £100. Never had an issue with wind buffeting or damaging the paint work, but it was parked by a fence/house. I had no moisture issues.

On my Mk1 I've used a non-woven (soft ) showerproof cover next to the paintwork then a fully waterproof one on top for 8 years with no appreciable deterioration in the paintwork (I suppose regular washing and polishing helps that).
The top one is clipped at each corner with spring clips to stop it chafing and blowing off.
Both covers are cheap and cheerfull from fleabay (about £40 for the top one) and last about 18months - 2 years (ultra-violet will do for any cover regardless of quality).
Its important to park it over a well drained surface so damp doesn't affect the underside - well drained concrete or tarmac is best followed by gravel but avoid parking on grass or unpaved surfaces.
