Where could i put the dog?
Discussion
I would love to swap to a mx5 but ive got 2 of us and the dog to carry, i know a lot of older soft tops had a little shelf behind the seats which would have worked fine but not sure if the mx5 has this, Is there any modification/trim i could rip out so pooch (jack Russel) sized can come out with us?
I believe it’s against the law to have an untethered/in restrained dog in the car in the U.K these days.
It will need a harness clipped into a seat belt or be in a cage/dog guarded area.
Putting it on a shelf with the roof down will be like a catapult if you have to brake hard or hit something a speed.

Correct. It's classed as an unrestrained load, though only the nobbiest of traffic officers would give out a ticket for that. It will need a harness clipped into a seat belt or be in a cage/dog guarded area.

This is on Ebay for £225.....
Couple of years ago we happened on an MX5 in mid France.
The couple were driving up from the South to UK roof up on a hot day.
Reason?
Two dogs on the rear parcel shelf - not small dogs either.
Seems they were all happy travelling that way - chacqun etc.
Only problem with having the dog in the passenger foot-well on a long journey is that the exhaust does of course run under there so potentially can get quite hot.
As has been said it's a good excuse to buy another car to transport the dog.
I killed two birds with one stone by buying a BMW Touring which coincidentally happens to have a V8 under the bonnet

My dad takes his border terrier on his motorbike in a specialist tank bag, so I'm sure getting a small dog in/on an mx5 is possible!
Maybe you could get one of those boot racks and buy a dog bag and strap it to that?
Basically it's just their head and neck outside the bag but the dog absolutely loves it!
