Grinding sound with medium revs and low gears, 2008 NC

Hi, I bought a second hand 2008 NC recently and have noticed a few things. Firstly there is a slight grinding noise when idling, louder if you stick your head next to the wheel. In addition there is a grinding noise when you accelerate hard in first or second in mid range revs, seems to go away if you go over 4500rpm or under 3000rpm and the gear shifter is hard to change gear. Do these sound like a problem with the clutch or something more serious?
