hi rich, yes this i a 1.6. Do you think i would be hard to drive without the ABS as i am a newer driver and dont have much experiance with sliding cars and situations like that. personally im not too put off my this.

personally I dislike abs, suppose that could be due to learning & growing up without abs? or finding it a hinderance to competitive drivinglaugh

if you think abs is needed then I believe it was available from ~1995ish in the UK (although UK cars can be rusty so I'd advise buying a 5 on bodyshell condition not spec...)

Rich.

As Zed has said, the world grew up without ABS and we didn't all die biggrin

You can learn the theory of braking well and how to avoid hitting things if you do lock up, and you can do some track time / skid pan work to understand what happens before slides (front or rear) happen.

I am new to RWD also and the 5 is a nicely balanced, low power car to learn it in.

ABS on the NA MX-5 is pretty crappy to be honest. I had a late UK car with it and it was the worst thing about the car. Cut in very early and clumsily.

I don't really remember ever locking the brakes in non-ABS NA's over many miles but you can always spend a bit of time on some quiet roads to understand what it takes to lock up and how it feels. I don't think it will be a problem at all, just drive sensibly, leave good gaps/margins and read what's happening well ahead of you (applies to any car but many cars will do more for you to make up for poor driving).

Get yourself on IAM / RoSPA / High Performance Course / A.N.Other driver training course and it will reduce your need to brake heavily or steer excessively winksmile
