I bought an almost immaculate late 2007 MX-5 2.0 Sport in Nov 2010 for a very reasonable £9200. At the time it was towards the lower end of the price bracket which transpires was down to JCT600's policy of getting rid of cars off their forecourt at a certain point.

Fast forward to 2020 and looking for a comparable 3yr old model suggests that £19k is the going rate.

WTF?

Either my expectations are completely off the mark or pricing has changed dramatically.

Quick glance on eBay and they seem to be between 14 - 15k, probably about right with inflation?

This intrigued me. Checking Autotrader you can get a number of 3 year old 2.0 Sport MX5s from a dealer for C. 15k. Inflation means your £9,500 in 2007 is now worth around £12,250. So much less of a delta than first appears, which may be further explained by the fact your last car was bought in November and it's now spring/summer, and, perhaps more subjectively, the ND is more desirable than the NC was - keeping values higher.

Very good points.

Although looking at late model NC prices they are also strong right now.

Also, the conventional inflation number used doesn’t take into account fully the amount of new currency that has been printed post 2008. An awful lot of real price inflation is actually currency devaluation and were about to see a lot more of the same!

Seems about right to me, plenty of 3 year old NDs around that money.

MX-5 pricing puzzles me too.
I bought a 2007 NC 2.0 Roadster Coupe in 2008 for £11750 which was about £2k less than the dealer should have listed it.
I sold it 2 1/2 years ago for £4250 which was mid-way in the chasm between WBAC and dealer asking prices.
Having been tempted back to another MX-5, I've been browsing for some time and don't think I could buy back my own car without having to pay more than what I sold it for!

I think that the lack of a PRHT has put a lot of people off the ND. (The RF is more of a targa than a retractable top).

I recently bought a very late (2015) NC. I could easily have got an ND for around the same money, but the PRHT was the killer feature for me.

You're only speaking from your own experience, personally i'd avoid a PHRT. They sold many more NC soft tops than hard tops hence them not bothering with it on the ND.

When I smashed up my first 5 the insurance company gave me nearly a grand more than it's paid for it a year earlier.
After a fair bit if searching I then found another one which had less miles on it than the one I'd smashed up for less than I'd paid for my first a year earlier. Ended up well worth the extra £80/100 insurance premium a year to smash up my first one.

I'm curious what the recent substantial price hikes do to 2nd hand values, although last year they were giving pretty chunky discounts against RRP anyway so it might be academic.

This is something I will be watching, a few ND2 GT spec cars sold for around £19k-£20k recently but nothing has come up that cheap on the last few weeks. Its not long enough to judge but the newly added cars have been £22k+. I am in no rush and it doesn't feel sensible to buy a new car at the moment so will wait and watch.

FWIW a year ago I paid £23k for my ND2 GT brand new with Soul Red Crystal paint, the dealer lowering springs, and Apple Carplay as paid options. At the time it made absolutely no sense at all to buy a year old car over a new one. RRP was over £27.5k with the options/extras.

I have been shocked at the price increase on the 2.0 litre cars. I'm aware Mazda have done this due to the EU emissions issue and really would rather you bought a 1.5 but if you wanted a new ND 2.0 with the BBS alloys its something like £32-£33k. which is quite silly imo.

I have a ND 2.0 184bhp RF with the BBS alloys thankfully before the price hike (late 2018 car)

Are the BBS alloys much lighter than the OEM 17"? In the US and on the new top spec cars you get them in a gunmetal grey but I think the dealer optional ones are gloss black?

The new BBS are matt finish the ones from 2016 ish to 2019 are black.
Weight wise they weigh the same as oe alloys I believe. Same tyre size as well.

Just look cool, imo of course.

I hope the 184 bhp models will long long term hold their money well. I can't see them taking up a big % of nd sales with the new pricing. I love an mx5 (got rid of my 911 to get back into an mx5) but no way are the 2.0 184 new models due what rrp dealers want. I don't know what they actually sell for but it's still a chunk of coin.
