Yes, long time ago. You don't need any special skills. I only replaced the roof itself so the old was stripped off with the frame in situ and the new fitted to frame and car at the same time. As long as your frame is in good shape I think it's the easiest way. Only tools I needed where a socket set, a couple of screw drivers, a drill and a pop riveter. The fixings to the frame bars were velcro except the front which screwed on IIRC and I backed that up with double sided carpet tape.

I'd recommend taking out the seats and either doing it on a warm, dry day or in a well heated garage. This is not just for your comfort but the roof (vinyl) was easier to work with when warm. Don't rush, you want things lined up and no creases before you commit to some of the fixing steps.

Did you get new roof cables? Perfect time to fit them, a pain to do later if one breaks.

My roof was quite tight after fitting but was slowly stretched by pulling it closed in increments in direct sunshine (a warm air heater in the cabin would probably do the same).

A lot of people recommend the likes of Jack Smiths in Swansea or other trimmers because often they'll supply and fit a new roof for not a massive amount more than you can buy one and they know what they're doing. Worth a try if Swansea isn't too far away.
