Too narrow for a manifold, it might be part of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

A clue to what sort of vehicle it is might help.

Yeah, if it's metal, which it looks like to me, it'll be something hydraulic. Pas, AC or brakes. Looks a bit narrow for AC I'd say.

Could be a fixed oil feed to a turbo

Looks like an MX-5, not sure what the pipe is for though. It's on the intake side though so probably not a turbo oil feed.

Yeah its an MX-5, mate said that there is some metallic rattling coming from the engine. Failed its MOT because they wouldn't run an emissions test because of the rattle.
Mate thinks its coming from this?

Eh?

That aside - to be blunt, no offence no obligation to know anything about cars - what you or your mate thinks very evidently really counts for very little at all.

Best get a proper explanation as to why the car failed its MOT and then take it to a garage to look into this properly. Your guesswork can only make things far more expensive and generally uselessly so.

Legit just asked if you know the name of the pipe. If you don't then no need to comment

They didn't want to rev it high for the emissions because the noise sounded so bad they thought it might blow up!? have you/him heard anything untoward to date......it sound serious for a MOT station to refuse to test.

Can't see that pipe is never going to cause that? (does it rattle from cold? if so hold this and see if the rattle tone changes if you put pressure in various directions - my guess is it doesn't).

The only thing you could do easily is listen to it jacked up, or with the front hanging off a curb etc (get down on the floor), also does the clutch being down change the noise. It's all clutching <sic> at straws but if you can narrow it down to an area others could advise more easily.

Is the rattle in sync with the engine revs
Louder underneath or on top? Front or back?
Clutch operation does it make any difference to the noise

The pipe is the egr. MK2 1.6?

Anyway the pipes not making your engine rattle regardless.

If it's a MK2 1.8 then might be a good idea to check it's got oil in it, they do like a drink. But I'm.fairly sure the people in the best position to identify your problem are back at the garage.

Yeah I thought that might be the case. Well thank you all for the input.
The rattling is completely random, it rattles sometimes when you start up the engine, then it'll stop rattling 5 seconds later when idling
Depressing the clutch makes no difference to the rattle when it is happening, just some days it is worse than others.
Its louder from above the car too.

Best suggestions is to take the car to an experienced mechanic and get it sorted.
It would really bother me, when my car rattled like that.
