Having loved our NB but selling it (regrettably) as rust was starting to take its toll I find myself browsing the classifieds for an MX5 once more.

I am looking for a fun car that I can do jaunts with my nipper in, and an NC seems to fit the bill. I’ve contemplated Westfields and the like but the safety aspect put me off - in my head an NC is fun enough and cheaper...

You read a lot about buying a convertible in the winter - is there really any weight in this? I’ve seen a localish NC sport with just under 70k which has had the rust “professionally” sorted and it’s up for about £3.5k does this seem a good price or shall I wait? If it helps I’m impatient but the car is a want and not a need so I can wait...

What is the rust situation on them like - as bad as an NB?

What are they like compared to the NB? Mine was basic but a 1.8 with lsd and it used to amuse me. Are they as easy to provoke when the mood takes?

Thank you!

Firstly fun - Yes they are great fun and the back can be easily provoked if required. The early cars are a bit rolly so getting a car with some sort of shocks and/or ARB upgrade is well worth while. Very sensitive to geo too so always worth spending to get that checked by a place that knows how to set them up properly. If you are going to regularly track the car you might find you will want to upgrade more... (but thats always the way right?)
I have never driven an NB but I did have 2 NAs. I would say that the NC is 95% of the experience but 95% more modern. The more modern feel just makes it a bit less raw and therefore a bit less of an experience to drive. The 2.0 is quicker than the NB 1.8 (in a straight line at least) and comes with a LSD as standard.

Rust is slowly becoming an issue on early cars but it is not yet a major problem for the majority. It tends to be on rear arches and the back of the sill. It doesn't seem to effect the chassis rails like it does on the NB. General surface rust underneath it commonplace but not necessarily a problem. Look carefully.

£3.5k for a sport seems about right if it is standard set-up. But I would personally be a bit suspicious it has already had rust repaired, or do you mean it has been undersealed?

Are convertibles cheaper in winter? Maybe some truth in that but Its not a huge leap in prices I found. I did find that a lot less people sell convertibles in the winter so there is less to choose from. If you do facebook join the NC buy and sell page, there is a few cars on there at the moment.

Thank you for the detailed reply!

That was my thoughts about the car that had been rust treated, it is a 55 plate so guess it’s an early one.

I had a look for the NC buy and sell group on Facebook but couldn’t find anything...
