My eyes are fairly sensitive to draughts (I never point dashboard vents to my face, and I also suffer when driving with the driver's side window opened more than a crack). I quite fancy an old MX-5, but I've never driven a convertible before, and I half suspect I might not get on with open-air motoring. I'm about 6ft tall. How draughty is an MX-5 with the roof down - is there a lot of flowing air around one's face, or do you sit in a cocoon of still air?
It's not too bad at all if you keep the side windows up. I had 2 kit cars with aeroscreens and above 60mph it was almost impossible to see, but never had a single issue in an MX5.
Also you can de-form the seat to make it into a better bucket that holds you in place a lot better and also means you sit a couple of inches lower down, a very worthwhile mod IMHO.

Nice aerodynamic ears! They must be worth about 3mph in top speed!
I'll maybe see if I can have a ride in an MX-5. Bizarrely, I did have a test drive in a Mk 3.5 with the electric roof a few years ago, and it was only after the test drive that I realised that I hadn't driven it with the roof down!

As convertibles go they are pretty good. The lower you sit in the car the better and a bigger wind deflector makes a difference. But they are still blowy. Definitely enough to mess your hair up (not that I have much)
I normally wear glasses in mine for that very reason. If you are really sensitive to ot I suspect it sont be for you.. saying that the experience is totally different to a vent blowing on your face or having your window down. Much more enjoyable.

Hi.
I don't hold out much hope of you enjoying topless motoring to be honest but an MX5 has more going for it than just having the hood down.
Mine does far more miles with the hood up, in fact from Oct/Nov onwards (weather dependant) the hard top goes on until March.
It doesn't however stop me enjoying what is a super little fun car that puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

I've had, and have, a few convertibles. The MX5 is great in that regard. If you have the windows up, heater blasting and heated seats on toasty setting you are in your own buffet free bubble. Different story with the windows down tho and I found a test drive in the RF version felt really blustery.
