So... my first MX-5 is the cheapest (with MOT) I could find. Sight unseen (obviously).

I bought it 1 week in advance of a European roadtrip to the Nurburgring, and on to the Alps.

It was a princely £320. Current MOT. Mostly not disgusting. Even had a few fanbelts on the parcel shelf. Not sure if this is a bad omen, but we'll see.

Driving it home, it really needs a wheel balance, but the radio works, it doesn't overheat, and it didn't misfire or much else too concerning.

It's a bit crusty, but we'll see how it gets on. I bought some better bulbs (Osram Nightbreakers) and a European driving kit.

What could go wrong?!

Assuming the chassis rails don't collapse in the next few days. Should be all good!

(You have checked them to make sure it's safe to drive at all right? hehe )

Yeah, bulbs, I go through so many bulbs on my NB - take plenty; I'm adept at changing them in the dark.

Good luck - if you get there, and more importantly, back, then it will be £320 well spent!

Keep us updated with your progress.

That's almost cheaper than european car recovery cover/insurance.

If it breaks down (terminally) I assume you just leave it at the side of the road or find nearest local scrap yard to come and collect it.

Or would they bill you in the UK for shifting it?

I've been wondering about doing this myself... Find the cheapest 5 I can with a decent length MOT regardless of rust and see if I like it, then either bite the repair bullet or find a good one if I fall in love. Let us know how it goes!

Yeah I gambled in France recently (Trip to Paris) in a stty old Mk2 I bought from a dodgy trader lol

It made it (Engine light came on as I pulled into my home town though)
(Since discovered that the lights come on erratically, ABS, Handbrake and EML, no real pattern, think its an electrical glitch)
