Afternoon all,

In the process of buying a 2nd house so freeing up funds by selling the car(s) leaving me without a car for c6weeks. Having had a Mk2 RS edition with a Torsen LSD many years ago I'm keen to spend c£2,000 on a Mx5.

Now, I'm not going to be able to find a RS edition for that money so happy with a boggo spec but really do want a 1.8 146bhp one with a Torsen LSD - where can I find out what models come with these?

All advice welcome.

TIA

I know the MK2 1.8S models had an LSD. These also had a nardi airbag wheel and metal door entry plates.

Hi,
I have just bought a 2000 W reg NB Icon and they have 1.8, six speed and Torsen plus Nardi Wood bits. There are some around for your budget and some that are not terminally rusty. I’m sure an expert will come along with more suggestions of specs for your money.

So am I right in thinking that 6 speed boxes and Icons (plus some other special editions possibly) have LSD’s? Are they the Torsten type though?

The 1.8 Icon from 2000 certainly has a Torsen LSD and 6 speed box. The MX-5 OC site might give a run down of other LSD models. I think the Montana might be 5 speed??

Your best bet for that price is a Mk 2.5 S-VT Sport. For that you get 146 bhp, 6 speed box & LSD, but it will be the later Fuji diff.

I'm told that if the 6th from last figure in the VIN is a 3 or higher then its Fuji, which is the same company as Torsen anyway.

The snag with a 2.5 is the double thickness front chassis rails so check for rust.
I bought mine but was aware the problem would arise but being a welder I just allowed for it in the price I payed.
I now have double strength but single thickness metal so win win.
