Hi,

I recently had a flat tyre in front of my house. The breakdown guys changed the wheel for the spare in the boot, but could not fit the flat tyre and wheel either in the boot or the passenger seat.
Fortunately we have another car so we took the flat the be mended in that - but what if I was on the hard shoulder of the motorway? Would I just have to abandon the whole wheel? eek
We have now decided to carry a spray for re-inflating a flat in emergencies, and maybe remove the spare all together for more luggage space when needed.
Any advice on this? Is there some way a flat tyre and wheel fits in an MX5 mk 2?
Thanks
Rosie

standard wheels/tyres? I'm sure you can fit standard size wheel in the boot.

Be aware that the spray cans only "fix" small punctures and will mess up the tyre by covering the insides with glue so it's unlikely to be repairable once you get to a tyre place.

Strange that you couldn't fit it in the passenger side - just how large are your rimz?

I would just stick a bungee cord in the boot, then if the situation arises again you can fit the wheel in the open boot and bungee the boot lid as shut as it will go. Far preferable to having no spare and just a can of tyre foam.

Nope, me and the breakdown guy tried all ways, wouldn't fit in either! Maybe the Mk2 1.8 Sports wheels are bigger? But thanks for getting back!

Thanks eybic - but still better than leaving the whole wheel behind. I'm told there are some places now that will 'clean' the tyre and mend it - but this may be just a rumour....

Not sure of the size - must admit it looked like it would fit easily, but we couldn't make it work. Good idea about the bungee though, I'll pop one in the boot! Many thanks

When i had my Mk1 MX5 I fit a 295/40/18 tyre in the boot with a bit of string to hold it down and the other on the passenger seat so im not sure how you couldn't fit a standard size wheel and tyre in anywhere

I promise you we couldn't fit it in. If it was just me I would agree that maybe I was just being thick,. but my husband and the AA guy both tried for ages and couldn't do it...the bungee to hold the boot shut still sounds the best bet. Thanks

We do quite a lot of touring in our Mk1 so the boot's full of luggage as well as a get-you-home spare (don't want to rely on a can of fizz just in case those pesky corner apex kerbstones slash a sidewall half way up a mountain!).
Like Paul I carry a ratchet strap but in our case that's to strap the flat to the roll-over bar.
Only potential problem there is that it will only work with the roof down i.e. need to have a flat in fine weather...
Cheers, Pewe.

If you were wondering where to put your punctured wheel then your "get me home spare" wouldn't be in the boot. It would be on the car.

I was talking to a bloke once at a Colchester OC meet who had been to the South of France. He said that he hung his clothes in one of those dry cleaning covers and then hung them behind his and the passenger seats.

Personally I shove my orange overalls together with my grub bag down in the passenger footwell. smilesmile

Many thanks to all of you who have been in touch with helpful suggestions - feeling a lot safer now, and confident that wherever I have a flat, I'll be able to get the spare home somehow with a couple of extra bits of kit in the car.
Thanks again to all, Rosie

I get your drift but flat tyre's too wide to fit into the boot in any event...

I'm also a bit confused by this monster-sized wheel you must have. Being a sport it's probably a 16, but even then, there should be room.

I've had 4 15" wheels with tyres in mine before (one in the boot, one on the parcel shelf, 2 on the passenger seat).

Some Mk2s did come with 17s, but not in the UK iirc....
