Just occasionally my 1995 MK1 1800 hesitates at low revs as I accelerate... its done around 60,000 miles from new.

Say I slow down, and then without changing down it misses a couple of beats and then is fine.

any suggestions?

Are you getting any other issues like inconsistent (not necessarily rough) idle, engine running rich or excessive fuel consumption?

Had something similar recently on my 95 1.8 but also all of the above - turned out to be a fairly bad vacuum line split - but nothing some electrical tape couldn't get me home with!

Was idling anywhere between 800-1600rpm when stopped at junctions with the clutch in/car in neutral - as soon as I hit bite it would sit at 800 ok. Also used about 1/5 tank on a 20 mile round trip which was definitely odd.

Would definitely check vacuum lines and perhaps the PCV to make sure it's ok.

Might be worth changing the temperature sensor on the back of the block. Quite a common fault and cheap to replace. Or at least it is on the 1.6.
Google green temp sensor.

And just to add more confusion when did it last get new plugs and leads?

Thanks guys...

I have had a look at all the hoses and all are good....

Does the temperature sender control the tem gauge? Thats reading OK....

As for plugs and leads, the plugs are new, but the leads are around 7 years old....

I guess i need to start replacing stuff... i am tempted to do a lambda sensor first as reading about it the have a limited life....

Any other suggestions welcomed

Perhaps change the fuel filter too.

No. Green temp sensor does not control the dial. They are about £5 and a 5 min job to change.
Mx5 are also very susceptible to bad leads so that is also a good shout.

Hi Op, had this happen on 2 of my MX5’s. Both times it was the coil pack. That said iI did do the leads 1st just to be safe but only really got the benefit after the coils were swapped.

thanks guys. I changed the coil pack as I had a spare one... still the same. I cleaned the MAF sensor.... still the same.

I will do the cheapest first and replace the leads, they will be here next week.

whats the thoughts on the o2 sensor? I believe these have a limited life and its never been changed...

Have you done the LED test to see if the engine is reporting a fault?
