Evening all.

I jumped in my wifes 5 earlier to move it forward a few yards and had the door open when I started it and it sounded a bit "fruiter" than normal. I tried having a listen underneath but can't get my head far under it. I tried putting a hand over each tip and couldn't really hear any blow, but I'm going to hopefully put it up on a mates ramp tomorrow to have a good look.

It's a 12 Yr old car so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the exhaust is starting to rust through, so that brings me my question. What to go for.

At the moment it's my wifes daily and while she loves the car, she's not a petrol head. She likes the red colour and the roof down on a nice day, couldn't really care for a loud exhaust. Me on the other hand, I'd quite like a bit more go to it. Our long term plan is that I'm rebuilding my garage this year, and then come the winter the 5 will be put into hiberbation and we'll get here another car and the 5 will become my toy with the aim om being something my boy and me can fiddle with as he grows up. The prices of back boxes seem to range from 220ish for a Japspeed up to silly money. I've heard mixed reviews of MX5parts own brand ones and the racing beat and IL motorsports ones have good reviews but a bit rich for me, especially with its current usage.

The car is due its Mot in April so I've got a little bit of time to sort something out, even if that means looking for a second hand one. I just don't want to buy something now that will be too loud for the Mrs, or worse still that will restrict potential tuning options in the years to come.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Have a look around facebook and the various forums and even youtube.
I believe the ilmotorsports one is rather loud and so is the mx5parts one.
Cobra seem to be very popular.
Personally i have the bbr gt backbox which i got 2nd hand which is a really good balance but epically expensive new.

Thanks for the reply, I'd forgot all about the thread.

I got under the car last Sunday and annoyingly the weld at the back of the centre box had cracked almost all the way around, so no excuse for a fruity back box frown. The centre box is on the same pipe as the center cat so was dreading having to change it all. Mx5 parts do a repair centre section that leaves the cat in place for £54 or so so I got one of them and fitted it on Wednesday. Between noticing the crack and getting the replacement, the pipe finallu snapped completely on my wifes drive to work on Tuesday. It was properly loud!

So all sorted, and for the cost it's not the end of the world of it all gets replaced by a full stainless system in a few years.

I have a ‘06 2.0 Sport and keep thinking of changing the back box. The one that seems to be recommended the most is the Colbolt exhaust sold through Moss Europe. Will be looking to but after it’s had it’s MoT in March.

At the moment our 5 is my wife's daily car so reluctant to start 'boy racer'ing it. I'm hoping to knock down and rebuild my garage this spring which will give the 5 somewhere off the road to live. Come the winter the 5 can then go into a partial hibernation and we'll get my wife another car, havnt decided what yet tho. Its either going to be something fiesta ish and keep using my Accord as the family car, or something bigger, I'm angling for a Kia Stinger, but she's taking it bit of convincing!

Over the winter then I may start pottering with the 5. Back box, Rx8 roll bars that sort of thing, working up to bigger/more expensive things in the coming years.
