I'm looking to replace the 1,8 brakes on my mk1, which is a pure weekend toy that gets driven 'enthusiastically' on the road only. I'm going to have the car for a fair few years and while it doesn't do a great deal of mileage annually I'd rather buy quality products than cheap, inferior (?) parts.

So far my research has revealed that braided lines and decent fluid make a difference, so they're a given. It also seems there isn't much love for drilled or grooved discs, and that plain are best.

With that in mind I'm thinking of getting some of these Brembo discs from Kam Racing for about £100:

255mm front and 251mm rear - https://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tuning/mazda/mazda...

The alternative is genuine Mazda discs from MX5 Parts, at £160+.

Front - https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/front-discs-genuine-maz...
Rear - https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/rear-discs-genuine-mazd...

In terms of pads I'll probably try Mintex M1144 on the front, and a standard Mintex pad on the rear.

Are there any comparable discs or suppliers I should be considering?

Thanks

Brembo plain discs will be perfect for you.If your car is strictly for road use I would recommend genuine Mazda pads front and rear.
The M1144's are an ok occasional track day pad and bite well enough from cold but they do produce a fair amount of dust.
The Mazda pads bite well, give a good pedal and are long lasting.I would think that you would struggle to fade them on the road given that you will be using new discs, braided lines and an increased boiling point fluid.

Yeah OE discs are good enough - I'm currently running Pagid OE discs which seem good, though I haven't done any trackdays on them. That being said, the previous discs were the cheapest, unbranded discs that could be found and they held up to quite a few trackdays, before recently being replaced for OE Pagid discs and M1144s on the front (which do produce a lot of dust) and EBC Greenstuffs on the rear.

I've got standard discs and ceramic pads on mine, and it coped with a load of fast laps at Knockhill. After the 3 lap "warmup" all 4 wheels appeared to be on fire, seemed that was just the pads bedding in, left it to cool a bit for 10 mins and then did I think 20 fast laps and they were superb, no hint of fade, no nasty smells etc...

The pads are Axxis Ultimate Ceramic, a bit more expensive than others but I believe are very highly regarded, certainly IMHO they are superb.
