Can anyone recommend some seat covers for a mk1 to hide the usual drivers side seat bolster wear ?

Recovering the seats with leather is easy enough and very DIY-able. You have to remove and dismantle the seats but it's easy to do and can be done in your lounge over a couple of hours.

The problem these days is finding replacement leather covers for reasonable money. Seven or eight years ago it was easy to find new seat leathers for £150-£200 and I did mine, and then later did my uncle's and both looked great. These days they're harder to find and usually cost circa £500.

A cheaper and easier option is to buy replacement seats from eBay or wherever. All seats from Mk1 to Mk2.5 have the same fitment and it's really easy to swap them over - four 14mm bolts per seat is all you have to deal with.

Very useful advice . I'm actually hoping to find an affordable source of the cloth seat covers but so far no joy .

Not cloth (neither real leather) but these seem decent for not too much money...

Looked at these, but just bought a set of used seats for my sheddy Roadster as the hot and humid Caribbean climate here has rusted the seat pans and rails, and took out the upholstery and half the foam filling.
Sourced them back home in the Netherlands, which was extra convenient as the less worn passenger seat from a Dutch MX-5 would become the more used driver's seat on my Roadster. Top tip... two MX-5 seats fit in 2 suitcases and airplane checked luggage restrictions for Netherlands -> Cayman Islands flights.
