Sadly I am getting rid of my 1990 MK1 as it has come to deaths door (the person I bought it from concealed the problems very well).

One of the many problems I have had for the past few weeks is my exhaust, it has recently started rattling a lot, but I had been unable to find any lose parts of a whole. Yesterday morning a metal plate has broken off its bracket and was dragging for the last couple of hundred metres home.

The metal that I can see has broken off is at the rear end. It is roughly where the front of the rear wheel arches are, with access being from the passenger side of the car. The plate is still attached at the front and appears to cover the left hand side of the exhaust, but it could have moved when it came loose. (I will get a picture of it when I get home)

I am buying a new car and Mazda are going to give me £5K trade in under the scrappage scheme if I buy a new one, so I only need any fix to work untill the end of August. But I need to be able to drive the car to the garage to trade it in.

Can anyone advise if I can remove the metal plate and my car will survive a couple of weeks without it, or a temporary fix to keep me going.

Looks like a heat shield, very common for them to rust and break. Personally I would just tear it out but if you want to retain it then just wrap some wire around the entire thing and twist it tight with pliers to stop it rattling.

Most likely the supporting washer has pulled through the heat-shield.
Undo the fixing nut then use a large repair washer to support the fixing nut.
I have seen heat-shields retained using silicon gasket maker or even No-nails!
HTH.
